For a while there it seemed like everyone was making an MMORPG and there was a new MMORPG coming out every week, particularly once the free-to-play model caught on.

I haven't heard anything from that space in a long time though and other than the two or, well, two, big name MMORPGs, I haven't heard of any being developed or gaining much community attention.

Are there any MMORPGs coming out soon that you know of that sound interesting and that you're looking forward to?

The economic model just doesn't work in a winner takes all market. Maybe try https://veloren.net as a open-source multiplayer RPG (not really massive, but there are typically 100+ players on the main server at any given time).

This looks like a very interesting project! But it looks like it's still in pre-alpha. That's not a bad thing, it's just important to note for anyone thinking of trying it so they don't get the wrong idea about the state of the game. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it!

Like most open-source projects it is in perpetual development. Yes, some parts are still not done and rough around the edges, but it is already a playable game. If you wait for it to be "finished" you might be in for a disappointment 😅 0 A.D. for example is still in "alpha" 20 years later...

True enough, but this project has a pretty clear roadmap with planned features laid out and the developers themselves raised the concern of giving new players the wrong idea in their FAQs about a Steam release.

I'll definitely be checking it out for myself, though.

Ashes of Creation seems like it has potential - it's certainly gotten my friend group very excited to play an MMO other than WoW for 1 month every 2 years!

I'd recommend checking it out, there are regular Dev logs and fairly in depth wiki entries about what the game will have (though these are just taken from talks the lead Dev has given and aren't necessarily how the game will turn out)

It's also worth noting that development seems to be going slowly. I'm cautious to call it out as another Star Citizen, but I might be blinded because I want this game so badly, like Star Citizen backers are desperate for Star Citizen to be real

Best approach to those sort of game is to basically ignore it until they actually release it. I got burnt by Star Citizen before and from there, I just assume all games are vaporware until released.

I'm personally interested in Ashes of Creation and Pantheon Rise of the Fallen. I wouldn't say "soon" though. These are also quite old school style MMOs, which I'm old and remember EQ so I'm looking forward to them.

Supposedly Blue Protocol is coming out "Soon". It's more of an anime action based MMO.

If you like skill based, janky, developed by 2 people, Project Gorgon is quite impressive imo. $45 1 time fee, and go to it. It gave me a sense of adventure, exploration, etc. It's very old-school feeling, very slow, all skill based, so you'll be doing a lot of grinding. Some folks power leveled me, but I'd recommend not doing that as you miss a lot I feel.

Someone below mention Veloren. It's totally free to play, because it's all FOSS, built on Rust. It's a lot of fun, but nowhere near complete. You can play it singleplayer or multi. You can even run your own server if you want.

Project Gorgon is quite impressive

Does it have much of a user base?

That also makes me wonder if there are any MUDs out there that sill have a decent-sized active user base.

There seems to constantly be people in the main city. They hold an event on Saturday for people to get buffs and have fun. It's quite impressive to see how many folks attend. So I think there's a very dedicated user base for the game.

Feel like I heard about Pantheon a long time ago. I wonder where that's at and if there's a predicted release date at this point

[–] ozoned@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

They're doing monthly pre-alpha tests. There is not a predicted release date yet. There's some content to see, including some streams being able to show off the pre-alpha tests. I'm guessing it's at least a few years away at the last.

Wayfinder isn't really an MMO persay but the closed betas are super fun so I'll be playing that when it launches.

Besides that, the only major MMO coming out I know of is the one by Riot Games. But who knows when that's coming.
