Well, this could be Lemmy's chance. But it will need to be easier for ex-Reddit users to sign up. I know that Lemmy instances have been brigaded, so I guess better moderation tools will need to be created before open registrations happen.

Hello from Reddit, the signup was easy enough for me at least
I signed up a few days before reddit made the announcement lol to just check lemmy out since I've been hearing about it for a while. I had no idea reddit would do this then. I just figured out how to connect to different instances and this is my first comment in a different instance from the one I signed up :D
From someone that just joined today, what is an instance?
It's like servers just like the other used said. Each of them has their own guidelines and stuff from what I can tell. Nobody can make a sudden decision for all of the instances like reddit made about restricting their api I think but we can still interact with most instances.
Thank you! Excited to figure this all out haha.
It's another word for (Lemmy) server.
Oh okay! Thanks!
Well then this is maybe the first reply from jet another instance - Welcome!
Thanks for the welcome
welcome!! Here is maybe the first reply from a different instance ;D
Same, no issues so far
I agree, it wasn't bad. Most tech folks won't struggle. There are some rough edges that could be improved though.
Self-hosting Lemmy was pretty easy, and federation works well. Many little things can be improved but at least user-facing the big systems work. Moderation might be more difficult, as always with social media...
Well this is what made me stop lurking and finally sign up for a Lemmy account.
Same here. So far I'm pleased with the Jerboa app on Android. As a user of the Infinity app on Reddit I'm surprised how good things are working here.
As a platform I do need to see more content being posted, like a constant stream so I always have something new to scroll through... 😜
same here, although i only heard about Lemmy through discussion on Reddit yesterday
Lots of good information on reddit, what a pity.
Sad about that as well. It's my main source of information.
Paying for API access is... Understandable. Limiting the API calls is ridiculous. I will happily pay for a premium version of my 3rd party reddit app. But, if what it can pull is limited vs the official app, then reddit is something I'll begin to step away from. Gonna Digg/Tumblr themselves if they're not careful.
Does reddit even hear themselves? Making us pay for a subscription to use our favorite third party apps is one thing but making us pay for it with limitations like no access to nsfw content is pure insanity.
yeah, who comes up with shit like this and who believes it's a good idea.
Someone who intentionally wants this to die
Reddit apparently lol
yeah but it's like soooooooo dumb
I doubt anyone will notice.
If they do it, there would be reddit vanced
there already are Revanced patches for the official reddit app, although even without the ads it doesn't hold a candle to the third party clients.
What do third party clients (like Infinity) do better than the official Reddit app other than performance? Just curious
no ads and more customizability. last time I checked (and I've been checking multiple times over the years), the official client didn't even let me change the post and comment font size, which is by default too small for me. at the same time, I don't need huge-ass cards for every post and switch view to just post title with small thumbnails. I can sort subreddits I follow the way I want to, with the ones I visit most frequently on top of my list. I can add labels next to usernames with notes about the users. when I'm writing a post, there are buttons that help with quick markdown formatting. the comment section has got colorful depth markers so it's easier to keep track of the chains. even the UI integrates better with the rest of my OS. in comparison to that, the official app is a crippled mess that is only good enough when all you do is scroll through auto-playing gifs and videos, and it doesn't even support some of the native reddit features (like opening categories of your saved posts - a reddit ~~gold~~ Premium feature) that the third party clients do.
Isn't that Infinity For Reddit?
no, Infinity is written from scratch and fully open source. all Vanced apps are modifications of the official, closed source clients.
@Kay_Angel I don't know that much about development, but from what I see, the mods to the official apps are just that: mods
If you're on a device with limited space (say 16 GB internal storage), you'd definitely not wanna run a "reddit vanced"
This sounds like it could be the doom of the foss freindly Reddit
This already happened when they closed the source of the site years ago
There is still the old reddit and Foss clients
Which all use the same API
I've used Baconreader for a number of years. I guess that will be toast then?
Seems like unless they pay for the API, then perhaps.
It's no great loss as it was a one-off payment in the App Store. If they changed it to a rolling subscription then I would seriously have to consider my options.
