Thank goodness the "liberal media" is going to bothsider us right into fascism.

FFS - if Biden is really "mentally unfit" or cannot finish his term - he's surrounded by capable people and there is a chain of succession if it comes to that.

As for t**** - he and his party/cult want to end this country as we know it and/or exact revenge on all their perceived enemies.

It is not even close to being apples and apples here. But the GD media is determined to keep pretending as if it is. Right up until the new and improved Nazis come for them.

I feel like at this point, age is really the only way to attack Biden, which he can't defend against. When he entered the office, it was still the pandemic, and the economy took a hit. Inflation seems to be settling down now, and it seems like the Fed may get away with the soft landing. In a year, the economy could be turning around, who knows. The Republicans want the Hunter Biden relationship to show that he's corrupt like Trump, but there's nothing there, and that will fizzle out before election day.

There's tons of other things to attack Biden on, but in most cases, it's an issue he inherited, something which might not be an issue in a year, or general Republicans inaction to make him look bad. Age is easy to attack because he can't be younger, and somehow voters are too dumb to realize Trump is just two years younger than Biden. Literally every sentence about age and physical/mental health applies to Trump as well.

My fear is Biden drops dead but Trump doesn't. It's the main reason I want an younger candidate. Like if Trump died no prob, if both died, or just Biden dies it presents a dangerous opportunity for Republicans to grab power. Theses guys are really old and can drop dead any day and we don't need the unnecessary risk.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Well, if Biden dies on the job after winning a second term, it will be just fine. If that happens while he's running, maybe it's someone like Newsom (even though he's apparently a bit of turncoat when it comes to things we value) that has to quickly be put in there, I don't know. A contingency plan would be good.

[–] TechyDad@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

There are also issues that one can attack Biden on, but only from the left. Obviously, Trump won't use those issues because he'd be attacking from the right. (Or Trump will attempt to attack Biden from the right on these issues, but will fail at gaining any traction.)

Of course, I'll be voting for Biden if it's Biden vs Trump (or any other Republican). Hopefully, after 2024, though, the Democrats get some younger people in the White House.

In a year, the economy could be turning around, who knows.

According to economists, the economy has already turned around and things are great, and us stupid plebs need to get with the program.

[–] BertramDitore@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

This is exactly it. We’re way past the possibility of anyone credibly opposing Biden, so every single rational/reasonable American who thinks they have a choice is unfortunately deluding themselves. Either you vote for democracy and a flawed system that tries its best, or you vote for nihilistic fascists whose stated goal is to dismantle the administrative state. I wish we had more choices, but we don’t.

Let's ignore the BS polls that surveyed randos on the phone during the day.

Instead, remember that the GOP voted to ban a fuck ton of things, wage a war on "WOKENESS" wtf that means, continue to vote against medical change, vote against providing support to military vets, voted against 9/11 support, voted against student debt.

They're not interested in helping people.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

...and their base DGAF about helping anyone, even themselves, apparently. As long as they think they'll get to "own the libs" and be allowed to unleash all their fantasies on women, gays, POC, immigrants, etc...they'll vote for whoever they think will give them that...

[–] hydrospanner@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

...and their base DGAF about helping anyone, even themselves, apparently.

I'm just as anti-Trump as any rational creature, but I think you'll find a lot of conservatives, even/especially the ones who don't like Trump, would not even see the above quote as objectionable, and it's less "hurr Republican bad" and more that they don't think that's the job of government.

I'm not saying I agree with either the principle or practicality of their position, but one doesn't have to subscribe to their school of thought to understand it, and insofar as the idea of the government helping people goes, staunch conservatives generally oppose it. Not (explicitly) because they want to bring hardship upon people, but rather because they see "government help" as an overreach of their responsibilities, essentially raising taxes to essentially give those same dollars back to people who would have presumably been better off had the government simply never intervened in the first place and not taken taxes.

This is, of course, a gross (and often maliciously intentional) oversimplification on their part, because it invites a rebuttal that points out how those with need require more dollars in aid than they contribute in taxes...which of course steers the discussion in the direction of redistribution of wealth, socialism, communism, etc. at which point the argument usually becomes more rhetorical than anything.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I didn't mean it in the narrow form of "handouts", however. Government can and does do very much to decide how things are run. I know the Galt's Gulch type of cons/libertarians think that should not even be a thing, but of course they are completely delusional about large systems. If they think government should have no role in something like international trade agreements or where defense money gets allocated, I don't even know where to begin with them.

The point is that ultimately every middle and low class person needs a job with dignity and that has safety measures, access to affordable health care, food and water that is not contaminated, etc...and nearly everything about the Republican platform is about making any of that harder and harder. Of course they are going to make paeans to the magic of voodoo economics and "small government" but all that is simply absurd. First of all, if anything, the Republicans aim to make government even bigger, but just far more ideological, and secondly, Galt Gulch fantasies are ridiculous pap that just won't work for anyone but the Musks of the world.

Ultimately, the draw is about racism and their culture wars. They'll be even worse off than they currently are, but apparently they just don't care.

Boomers are gonna fuck us over one final time if we let them. Hopefully, the 18-25 crowd shows the fuck up like they did in 2022. That was supposed to be a "red wave" and give the Republicans the house and the senate. The kids said "Fuck no!" I hope they say "Fuck no!" again.

[–] assassin_aragorn@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Their defeat in 2022 might be what stopped them from taking even more drastic actions to hold onto power. Democrats took enough key positions that Republicans can't declare themselves leaders for life.

2024 can be the beginning of the end if the kids want to end the GOP's whole career, and teach them what happens when they try to mess with a woman's health.

[–] RGB3x3@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

God, I can't believe more people support Trump than Biden.

It's like choosing between eating shit and eating raw brussels sprouts. At least the brussels sprouts are healthy

[–] Pratai@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Don’t worry. It’s bullshit.

[–] Navy 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Completely unrelated but brussel sprouts have been bred to be less bitter than you're used too. Not terrible raw, but so good fried in butter.

[–] Modern_medicine_isnt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

what isn't good fried in butter?

[–] dmrzl@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago

The old, bitter variant of brussel sprouts.

[–] Navy 2 points 1 year ago

If it exists I haven't found it

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Strange how there’s never a poll as to whether people are completely over corporate news both-sides horse racing. Weird that, innit.

[–] utopianfiat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Despite these concerns they are defeating their opponents by so much though.

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Just not true.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Yet what also stands out in the poll are the warning signs for Biden beyond his age — including an all-time high disapproval of his job performance, fewer than 4 in 10 voters approving of his handling of the economy and lagging interest in the election among key parts of the Democratic base.

Ron DeSantis gets support from 16% — followed by former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley at 7% and former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Gov.

At the same time, the poll finds that the share of GOP primary voters who believe Trump should continue to be the Republican Party’s leader has increased, from 49% in June to 58% now.

Deeper inside those numbers, Biden is underwater among voters between the ages of 18 and 34 (46% of them approve of his job performance), all women (46%), Latinos (43%) and independents (36%).

Looking ahead to the 2024 general election, the NBC News poll shows Biden and Trump tied in a hypothetical contest among registered voters, 46% to 46%.

The national NBC News poll was conducted Sept. 15-19 of 1,000 registered voters — including 848 contacted by cell phone — and it has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
