Hopefully some of these flat earthers were CEOs? I mean to say "thoughts and prayers".

But maybe we need a new cutsey saying "at least one CEO amongst them" or something.

Good on them. Put those theories to the test! As long as they pay for it, I don't care if it takes an orbital ride or a trip to find the great wall of ice. This is oddly truer science than one would expect.

That story below is tragic. 12 restaurant workers killed in their dorm by fumes from a generator that was used while the power was out.

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I saw that as well. Was there ever an explanation for why they kept the generator inside? I really hope there was a good reason.

[–] Sadrockman@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Most likely because its cold enough there the generator would freeze if it was outside. Why they didn't put itin a shed,I guess because money? E: still there should have been ducting for exhaust. Unless there was,and the wind shifted, and blew the exhaust back towards the building?

People underestimate how quickly Carbon Monoxide can overtake you and how little air there actually is indoors. I was helping someone with their car once time. It was winter and we were starting it to see if something was working. He kept starting it with the garage door closed and seemed annoyed when I would open the door to vent the exhaust. I'd rather be slightly cold than dead. Those people that use keorose or diesel heaters on their garages in the winter just sketches me out. I'm ready to ditch natural gas from my home altogether because I just don't like the idea of it.

I went camping once with my dad and a few of his buddies when it was frigid cold outside. We piled 5 adult bodies into a camper, and they also left a Coleman gas lantern lit inside the camper all night for warmth.

I couldn't sleep for two reasons:

  1. One of my dad's buddies had horrible snoring, and

  2. I could feel myself choking on the stale air. I ventured outside every so often and would hold the camper door open for a few minutes (or until I would get yelled at). I don't remember 100% but I think I had a persistent headache that night.

I'm still convinced we could have all died.

The fact you don't know something doesn't make you stupid, it just means nobody has ever taught you about it.

Carbon monoxide isn't something people can just inherently know.

[–] lemmyman@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Fair enough. Human ignorance? I guess what I was getting at is that there isn't ever a "good reason" (which is the term used in the comment i was replying to) to exhaust a generator to any indoor space.

This is actually an incredible story.

~~Dave McKeegan,~~ a tremendous influencer in the flat earther world, was offered a free trip to Antarctica to see the sun circle the South Pole with his own eyes.

He agreed to go, and brought his own cameras to video the sun. He witnessed it, recorded it, and accepted it. He then posted the video and publicly admitted that he was wrong, and that the Earth is indeed round.

I have a lot of respect for the way he handled what I imagine to be very profound, and very public, cognitive dissonance.

https://youtu.be/in0B1OQG3-M

Edit: Dave McKeegan was the name of the debunker who organized the expedition, not the influencer whose video I saw and admitted he was wrong. My mistake.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Wait, did jeren flip? I know whitsit said it was evidence for the globe but didn't concede his stance.

[–] notjustlurking@lemmynsfw.com 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Dave McKeegan is/was not a flat earther. He's a debunker, and was funded as the globe proponent for "The Final Experiment". Jeran and Witsit, went for the flat earthers. There were others from both sides there with about 10 in total.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You’re right. I saw an influencer video where he did everything I wrote above. When I grabbed the YouTube link for my comment I saw Dave McKeegan’s name and made the incorrect assumption that it was the influencer’s video. My mistake.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, Dave McKeegan wasn't the one who organised the expedition either. That was Will Duffy. Dave is just a debunker, photographer and one of the "globe earthers" who agreed to go as well.

[–] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

I agree to go too. Where is my ticket?

[–] Threeme2189@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Dave McKeegan isn't a flat earther

[–] GojuRyu@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Dave McKeegan isn’t who offered to fund a flat earther. He was himself funded by the guy who arranged the whole thing, same as the flat earther was. Dave McKeegan was simply a prominent debunker with skills as a photographer who accepted to take part in this venture.

[–] OmegaLemmy@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago

Damn I should pretend to be a flat earther that trip to Antarctica sounds sick

[–] tobogganablaze@lemmus.org 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'd become a flat eather for a free trip to antarctica .....

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

True. It ain't cheap. I got all the gear for it and thought about doing that recently because it's geographically much closer than the Eurasia Alps.

Nope.

That boat from Australia is VERY expensive. Without expedition sponsorship or a science grant, not happening.

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 1 week ago

A better question might be: "how many popular ski resorts are in Antarctica?"

[–] wildcardology@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

The flat earthers who refused the trip knew the grift is over if they went.
