MODERATORS

CBS News cut out JD Vance’s mic on Tuesday night after Vance sparred with moderator Margaret Brennan over her fact-checking his false claims about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio.

Vance tried to lay out how migrants were entering Springfield before Brennan hit him with a rebuttal: “Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status.”

That appeared to set Vance off, who accused her of violating CBS’ rules for the debate. “The rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact check, and since you're fact checking me, I think it's important to say what's actually going on.”

The moderation on this debate was miles ahead of the prior debate and pretty much every debate I have seen over decades. They didn't bust every myth, but the absolutely let some debate happen and still called out the worst lies that Walz didn't cover, and even pointed out when questions were not answered.

The one thing they didn't do was confirm the fact that the law that allows undocumented immigrants to gain legal status was passed in 1990. They cut it off just after Walz responded, so hopefully that stuck with some people.

I thought the last debate was surprisingly good. They called out any lies that were egregiously bad or dangerous because of the extremity of the lie, like baby murder and the pet eating myths.

I didn't watch this debate though. How was the fact checking different?

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago

The fact checking was more firmly stated compared to the first one where they would let Trump talk over them.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I saw that! We need journalists to grow a pair and hammer down when the question isn't answered.

The network said this week it would encourage the candidates to fact-check each other, but it never ruled out the notion that moderators would fact-check the candidates.

It’s a pleasure to see the only party that everyone respects worldwide, the master negotiators who fixed the Iran nuclear deal, in action.

[–] distantsounds@lemmy.world 33 points 1 month ago

There were no facts being presented, hence the mic cut.

[–] Volume@lemmy.world 32 points 1 month ago

So the headline is slightly misleading. While yes, technically Vance's mic was cut off, both his and Walz's were cut of. Iirc the moderator also said something along the lines of "Gentlemen, we have cut your mics off..."
