European politicians and diplomats had already prepared for changes to their relationship with the US in the event of a second Donald Trump presidency.

Now that the Republican candidate has chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate, those differences appear even more stark on prospects for the war in Ukraine, security and trade.

A vocal critic of US aid to Ukraine, Mr Vance told this year’s Munich Security Conference that Europe should wake up to the US having to “pivot” its focus to East Asia.

"The American security blanket has allowed European security to atrophy," he said.

If you think European leaders are worried, try being an American citizen!

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 55 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Imagine being a Ukraine citizen!!! For them it's literally life and death on a daily basis.

He might be my worst nightmare: an intelligent, opportunistic, disingenuous, duplicitous, hateful, proudly misogynistic, election-denying, authoritarian-curious chaos agent, wrapped in a young relatively attractive white man’s body. He will do a far better job than Trump ever could at making their sick regressive and paternalistic fantasies come true for all of us.

He actively beliefs and endorses Dark Enlightenment and the media needs to start drawing attention to it.

Fuck. This is worse than I thought. I also really don’t like that I’d never heard of it, so thank you.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 16 points 4 months ago

Oh for fuck's sake, guys... Please don't do this to the rest of the world, jeez.

[–] VitaminF@feddit.org 3 points 4 months ago

Cool, I love learning new terms that will haunt me in the future.

If you see a Nazi, say "nazi".

Don't think for a minute that Vance won't throw the orange clown under a moving train once he positions himself in power. The orange felon's days are numbered.

He might be that now, but Trump is gonna make sure to break him of that competence and any accompanying confidence.

The man cannot handle the idea of someone being in a position to replace him even if he dies, because to him that means they can replace him in a plot to kick him out.

[–] 4am@lemm.ee 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don’t think we should find out

Might be the idea. “They won’t dare try anything now, because it’ll be worse.”

[–] radivojevic@discuss.online 7 points 4 months ago

I’m sure he has some underage skeletons in his closet.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Eh, maybe. He's largely untested. Hopefully he'll stay that way.

Every time I read JD Vance my mind goes

"JD Vance of Vance Refrigeration"

What was that guys name from The Office again?

[–] VonKeebler@ttrpg.network 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I keep thinking of J. D. Power and Associates like he's gonna rate Honda Civics.

[–] Decoy321@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I keep seeing his have and confusing him for Dale from Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

Like, without Alan Tyduk, the evil wins.

[–] Delusional@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Bob. Bob Vance, Vance refrigeration.

[–] christov@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

What line of work are you in JD?

[–] aleph@lemm.ee 13 points 4 months ago

Implying that the UK has been overrun with scary Islamist muslims was a choice, too.

When Scanned At Vet, Microchip Identifies Owner As: Peter Thiel

Make sure you know the truth around this part and how it relates to elon musk announcing that he'll perpetually donate $45 million per month to trump.

East Asia? Hmm, what's in East Asia? (Real question)

[–] DemBoSain@midwest.social 11 points 4 months ago (2 children)

He's saying he wants to let Putin have Europe so we can focus our military on China.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Aren't China and Russia tryna get fancy with each other right now? Or is Russia like an ammo addict and China was happy to foot the bill?

Either way, leaving NATO is not date bayo. I believe in the power of friendship and that includes nation friends.

[–] DemBoSain@midwest.social 14 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I truly have no effing clue what is going on with MAGA and Russia. MAGA has some kind of love for Putin, despite Republicans absolutely despising the Russians (COMMIES!!!) since before WW2 ended.

When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Reagan wet himself. He couldn't get weapons into Afghani hands fast enough. Now they roll over and beg Putin to rub their bellies. Vance is using the tension with China as an excuse to abandon Europe.

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Whoa there. Putin changed the name of the KGB. It's the FSB now. All is good.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Mainly it’s Russia’s influencing efforts. Many Western right-wing politicians are in their pockets, their money supports many hard-right parties, and their propaganda directly influences and pushes voters to these parties. So primarily it’s a practical relationship of aligned goals, as Russia’s global activity helps them get more power domestically, so they are more lenient with Russia’s fuckery in e.g. Ukraine.

Secondarily there is a sympathy, as Putin did many things they would like to do domestically, building a white Christian anti-LGBT nation with a strong hand (at least in perception). I also once read an article I couldn’t find now, that explained how in global Christian “church politics”, Russia managed to get very close to and influence US Christian leaders, so that might also have an impact.

I could certainly imagine him holding the Mearsheimer position of "Russia is America's natural ally against China", though to be clear this is me speculating
