Well, you can try mine, https://lemmings.world. It's federated with the bigger instances so you won't miss any content. It's well maintained and supported. And I plan on maintaining it long-term. Also it has Lemmings in the name.

How are you defining "good" here? Off the top of my head I would say
- lemm.ee
- lemmy.sdf.org
- lemmy.one
- sh.itjust.works
This is a great list of general-purpose sort of "next step down in size from lemmy.world"-instances.
Well, by "good" I meant general purpose, no NSFW, federates with bigger instances, consitent uptime .. etc.
My instance (https://lemmings.world) fits most of that!
- general purpose
- federates with bigger instances (I even have a bot running that's subscribing to popular communities across Lemmy instances so the All feed is full of content and really comparable to the biggest instances)
- consistent uptime (I have 100% according to lemmyverse.net and 98.93% according to fediverse observer)
- the only criteria that doesn't fit is that I allow NSFW, but it has to be clearly tagged as NSFW, meaning you can simply disable NSFW on your profile

Well, depends on if you want to use the other account or not. I had an account on lemmy.world very briefly and I simply don't use it anymore. I didn't delete it in case I need it for some testing, but I don't use it.
Generally I'd say people use their app to login to multiple accounts? I know Liftoff (which I use) can do it, though I don't use the feature very much. I think I've read some apps can merge the feeds from all your accounts into one, though I don't know which (maybe even Liftoff can do it, I really don't know).
So probably lemm.ee and lemmy.sdf.org over the other two, then.

Not a small instance. It has over 20,000 users.
Yeah, I wasn't sure what OP meant by "small." I mean, it's user base is less than a fifth the size of .world, so maybe it counts.

I like mtgzone.com, but it might not be for everyone
Oh, Magic the gathering! I thought Marjorie Taylor Greene and was agreeing with you that it might not be for everyone.
Trying to imagine who would like her enough to make that. Conservatives only see her as a useful tool.
I have my tiny instance that currently has 4 users, with me being the most active. I update Lemmy regularly, upgrade and manage resources as needed, and even do server management via my phone when I need to. Federated with all of the big ones so there’s no lack in content and I’m always scouring for new communities to sub to. The only rule I have (aside from the ones stated in the rules page) is no NSFW. It’s mostly a CYA measure for myself.
Plus it has a fun URL!
I moved to lemme.ee. i find the rules and regulations and reason for defederation in lemmy.world is so insane. and performance was also not good on lemmy.world. many users have made accounts on the server. Lemme.ee is fast and didn't have any downtime till now.
In what country is lemm.ee hosted?

Tried lemmy.world and lemmy.one but they were both down frequently last week. Bounced to lemm.ee and it's been great so far. The admin is knowledgeable and cares about hosting.

Everyone should support small instances. It would be horrible if the entire lemmy network consists of like 10 large instances. And if people don't use the small instances, that will probably happen after a year or two.
Support all the people who has an instance and wants to contribute to the Lemmy network.
Go sign up right now, if only to have an alternate account when needed.
We need a basic set of criteria to vet new small instances as minimally viable, what are they?
Just spitballing a few...
- At least federated with large instances X, Y and Z...
- X or above uptime percentage
- no more than X ratio of users to posts
- clearly stated content standards and a functional nazi/fascist/misinformation moderation effort
What do you think the list should be?

I'm liking lemmy.one. federates with big instances, rarely downtime, and downvotes are disabled.
I've been enjoying Lemmy.blahaj.zone, though it's more niche given that it's an instance for trans people
The one I'm on is really good. There's been technical difficulties, but the admin is great.
Fediverse.observer is a good resource for sorting through and finding different instances for all types of activitypub platforms. There are pages for Lemmy and Kbin among plenty of others. That's how I found the instance I'm currently on, and I'm pretty happy with it.
Good is subjective, given I can see all of the same content, and more.
Also far fewer issues since I don't have to support 100k users here.
What do you mean by "just as good".
It really depends on if you mean amount of content, or are ok with there only being maybe one post a day but that being a quality post worthy of discussion.

There's quite a lot, you can check out join-lemmy.org for a solid list. Mine is open as well, but reading/writing isn't everyones thing
Was on world but then created same account name on sopuli.xyz and not had a single down moment since.
For a very small instance(10 users), you can try mine at endlesstalk.org. It also has multiple frontends hosted like lemmy.world and many others.
Otherwise I would recommend lemm.ee, lemmy.sdf.org and lemmy.zip
