So, not sure if I am completely off base here, but I had this odd thing happen today where I couldn't post an URL because whenever I did, part of it would be replaced with the text removed. You can see what I am talking about in the screenshot, and I am linking my comment below. Another commenter replied saying it was likely something related to a slur filter in my instance, so I am coming here for help to understand the issue. Sorry if this is completely wrong, I am not very well versed in the workings of the fediverse and different instance implementations. Here's the comment:

https://lemmy.world/comment/10534403

EDIT: if it matters, I am using the Boost for Lemmy android client

If you see this message federated, I don't think it's censored, but if you see this message through lemmyworld it is censored

In February 2004 in Scotland, Craig Cockburn

Absolutely no way this guy wasn't teased every which way to Sunday in school with that name LMAO

[โ€“] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Huh interesting, it's censored in L.W but not in my instance, which I would assume it would have been since it would federate through l.w.

Really, what's so dangerous about a theapp?

[โ€“] can@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Depends who posted it too

Testing: theapp

It only matters what instance you're logged into when viewing. Lemmy.World has a censor filter. Nobody else, that I've seen, does.

Edit: MrKaplan apparently removed it from the filter only moments ago.

lemmy.ml famously censors "bitch".

Edit: for my dot ml friends, "a female dog"

[โ€“] Synthuir@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 months ago

It also blocked emails sent inย Welshย because it did not recognise the language.

Highly recommend reading the Examples section of that page

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Ha, thanks for the reference. Now I am trying to think of what offensive word "the app" could be a substring for

[โ€“] can@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Maybe someone just really wants us to use the website.

[โ€“] smeenz@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 months ago

That doesn't seem likely in 2024

[โ€“] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 3 months ago

I couldn't find anything, probably a spam domain at some point, maybe

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

They just removed it, and now I can see it all in your comment :)

[โ€“] MrKaplan@lemmy.world 25 points 3 months ago (2 children)

it's removed from our slur filter now

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 22 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Just out of sheer curiosity, do you know what might have gotten it added in the first place? Is it a substring of some obscure slur? Substring of some spam domain or something?

Anyway, thanks for the fix

[โ€“] MrKaplan@lemmy.world 46 points 3 months ago

it was a significant part of the brand of a spam/advertisement campaign several months ago

Testing the URL I was sharing:

Edit: thanks, it works!

[โ€“] cedarmesa@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Why would it filter the***app? Make it make sense.

[โ€“] ahornsirup@sopuli.xyz 11 points 3 months ago

Seriously though, why? I'm not a native speaker so I think there's something going over my head here. Someone please explain.

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

I am about to do some searches for theapp* to find out lol

[โ€“] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Censorship is dumb as fuck and lazy. The sites that do this are as fucking stupid as the religious pearl clutchers out there getting mad when we say "God damn it" or "fucking Christ". Grow up you dipshit control freaks.

[โ€“] Stern@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

I'm fine with censoring spam personally (which was what the filter was originally doing, per lemmyworld admins).

I'm also fine with using ublock to censor ads fwiw.

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Testing in comment: removed

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Yep, the string "the app" as one word gets removed

I thought they removed the stupid slur list a long time ago. Thatโ€™s stupid. Also theapp.

[โ€“] Fern@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Did you check your phone or computer's text shortcuts? Has it ever happened for any other words?

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Using on a mobile app, not sure what you mean text shortcuts? Like auto complete? At first I thought it might copying the URL from Firefox with an extension that cleans trackers in URLs, but, not typed it manually several times, appears in the comment editor just fine, then shows removed when I post

huh. I was going to guess this was something to do with that creepy (how's that for understatement) "the happening" celebrity porn leak thing that happened.

[โ€“] redbr64@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

See mod comment t, they removed the filter

[โ€“] cabillaud@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I can't see any mod comment, not sure why
