The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

Female. I'm happy here. Tried to get my engineer husband to switch but he won't spend the time to set up something new. In his defense he's a great guy, a grill master, and has recently learned to make his own doctor and dental appointments.

Ok, there is at least 1 female here - not Bad at all!

Btw, I spent surprisingly small amount of time to set up Lemmy for me. But, I'm mostly, a demographic described in the post. Except Linux, stopped using it few years ago.

It was seriously 30 minutes of searching for alternatives to r/ and 10 minutes to setup - choose an instance, make a username, make a password. Then a day or two to figure out the buttons/settings/options. I don't understand the resistance. I did use Ubuntu on an old laptop when i broke up Microsoft for a few weeks.
