Unfortunately, this is really common in soil science news articles. They are written so a 5th grader can read them.

The amount of cussing I did with every mention of the word 'dirt'

Finally, if it's soil microbes, they are part of the soil biome, and thus it's not technically wrong.

I definitely got the impression from the title that somehow someone had come up with a way to turn literal dirt into energy.

Yeah, that'd be hard. Unsustainable too. Just look at sand mining for an example of how bad that would be.
