Just looked at the recent census results for the UK which is where I am and only 0.5% reported their gender identity is different to the gender they were assigned at birth, further to that only 0.2% specifically said they were trans. Not sure what it's like where you're from but 3% seems quite high.
You have to realize that not many folks are going to openly identify themselves to a government that has been hostile to them.
i shall accept your corrective information and update my expectations. makes my personal experience seem even more of a huge outlier but... eh, i guess in for a penny in for a pound or something.
