Sunca Bakic, who goes by Sandy, tells Metro Times the family decided to close up shop due to medical reasons. Her parents have owned the bakery for almost 50 years, since 1973. “Unfortunately, we made a family decision that we can no longer operate the business the way it needs to be,” she says.

The intention is clear: by imposing forced overtime the company can maintain the same level of production while cutting jobs. A worker at Jefferson North Assembly said, “There are a lot of lower seniority people who will be laid off. Everything we are finding out is from social media. We weren’t told anything when we left on shutdown.”

Chrystyna Nykorak and others say one of the few upsides to the conflict in Ukraine is the outpouring of support. […] “It's wonderful that the world is so supportive,” said Nykorak. “The world is finally understanding what Russia is about. We've known that for centuries. We've been under them for 350 years. We know what freedom is.”

The vibrant streets of each place had their own unique personality, and it seemed there was always a place for everyone. […] In Colombia, it seemed everywhere I turned there was a skate park, protected bike lane, pedestrian-only boulevard, or public art.

The report found overtaxed Detroiters have a clear preference for cash payments, though property tax credits and home repair grants are other acceptable forms of compensation.

Almost 60% of households in Hamtramck also have at least one person with limited English proficiency, according to US Census data. Although the census doesn’t collect data on specific languages spoken in a city, the most common languages spoken other than English are “indo-European languages.”

The statutory time period to protest incorrect tax assessments from 2010 through 2016 has already passed. “Unfortunately there are people who have not been able to take advantage of that process,” Chuck Raimi said. “To propose that people (who) did not engage in that process be compensated out of the general fund, the simple answer is you’d have to change state law to be able to do that.”

“White parents…are actually the strongest opponents and most sort of stuck in the mud about, ‘I am not going to get vaccinated,’” Lydia Wileden says. “We see a lot more likelihood of people changing their mind among residents of color, than we do among those white holdouts.” Researchers saw similar opposition in a recent survey on contact tracing in Detroit.

What stood out most from the data was the ubiquity of taco chains in the metro area outside of Detroit while the local, authentic tacos are best found in Southwest Detroit.

Jacqueline Richmond lost many heirlooms, including her late father’s collection of tools that earned him the title of neighborhood handyman and the most heartbreaking loss: her family’s Christmas tree topper — a Black angel that had been in her family for more than four decades. “You name it, we lost it,” she said. Richmond now has shelves in her basement, leaving nothing of value on the floor.
