From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I installed GNOME on my KDE fedora install some time ago not realizing it would litter my install with gnome apps. Wondering if there's a safe and easy way to remove them. Everyone online seems to say that removing a DE risks uninstalling a lot of stuff and thought I should ask here to be sure.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'm trying to open a port for transmission but before I get to know either of the 2 options I'd like to know what you recommend and why.

OS is xubuntu 24.04

Edit: I dont recommend this lol

They install an outdated package on purpose, because Blackmagic doesnt give a damn about Linux lol.

Use this Flatpak tool instead, which should work, will keep all the strange dependencies in an isolated container, and you can control filesystem permissions of that shady proprietary software from the GUI.

i tried out plasma on opensuse (in a vm) and liked how they handle panels, i especially liked how i could set the bar to be only as wide as the content inside it.
does anyone know if this is possible in mint?

I only just switched to Linux last month that time I don't know what Wayland or X11 is and I just use Linux like normal without knowing I'm using Wayland (KDE), now since I'm already configured my KDE desktop on Wayland and I don't wanna do it again, so I'm looking for a remote desktop that work under Wayland not locally but from anywhere does anyone know software like that exist? (Sorry for horrible English)

I sometimes write in German and French, which means non ASCII characters.

I don´t know if I just need to edit keyboard preferences to a different kind of keyboard (like US international) or if I must install whole language packages. I wouldn´t mind having the dictionaries and autocorrect for libreoffice, but after selecting the languages it also downloaded help guides in these languages and several regional variants of English (za, gi, ca...), which I don´t need.

I want to create a minimal install for mpv playback through jellyfin-mpv-shim and macast. this is going to be a base for a FOSS media sink akin to a Chromecast. you attach it to your TV and it plays whatever you send it, like movies from your jellyfin server and youtube/vimeo/piped/etc videos. otherwise, there's no interaction with it, it doesn't handle input (remotes, mice, keyboards, etc.), it's controlled via apps (jellyfin android and allcast).

I've already made a proof-of-concept device running debian 12 with Plasma and it (mostly) works. now I'd like to trim the fat and install only what's absolutely necessary as I currently only have a 2006 macbook with busted screen and GMA950 with a mechanical HD. I'm gonna go with LAN only so I don't have to dick around with broadcom WLAN.

what do I need in terms of DEs and/OR WMs? do I need those at all? I seem to remember that I could run firefox in kiosk mode without anything else but X11, could I run mpv like that? or possibly wayland? what would be the absolute minimum package-wise to achieve this?

to reiterate, it's only going to display full-screen mpv when there's video to play, no menus, navigation, nada. possibly some slideshow-while-idle thingy in the future if it doesn't add too much in terms of software needed, but not right now.

I have been daily driving Linux for over two years now and I have switched distros many times. So, when my friend bought a new laptop, I convinced him to install Linux Mint on it. I asked him if he wanted to dual boot, he said no because it would fill up all his storage. We installed Linux Mint. The other day, he wanted to play FIFA 17 on his computer. After 5 whole hours of troubleshooting we were able to get FIFA running smoothly with some issues. Next, he wanted to play Roblox. I guided him through the process of installing Waydroid and libhoudini, only to discover that Roblox would run at 10 FPS. With Minecraft, it wasn't any better. It took us 1 hour to get it working (not skill issue, he wanted to play cracked through Prism Launcher). Now, he wants to go back to Windows 10. I have already told him about dual boot, but he has only 256GB of storage and he wants to play a lot of games. What should I do? Install Windows to his laptop, install some other Linux distro, or try to convince him more about dual boot? Thanks in advance and sorry for the essay.

UPDATE: Of course I will help him install Windows on his computer if he wants so, I don't want to force him to use Linux after all. I just wanted him to give it a try, and maybe daily drive it, if he can.

EDIT: Because for some reason it was misunderstood, let me clarify it here. Roblox ran with poor performance on Waydroid, not Minecraft. I just said that the installation of Prism Launcher cracked was difficult. After that, Minecraft ran smoothly without any problems.

Is there some way I can unlock my btrfs encrypted disk using a graphical unlocking screen.

Basically I was setting up an On-screen keyboard so that I can use my PC in case I do not have a keyboard available. Only problem in setup is that I can't find anyway to use on-screen keyboard on that screen on which we enter password to decrypt disk.

Help please

I'm a i3 user that has been trying to migrate to sway.

I use it with these environment variables:

export XDG_DATA_HOME="$HOME/.local/share"
export XDG_STATE_HOME="$HOME/.local/var/state"
export XDG_CONFIG_HOME="$HOME/.local/config"
export XDG_CACHE_HOME="$HOME/.local/var/cache"

Which gives me a clean home with only ~/.local for my dotfiles.

And issue that I've noticed that I haven't been able to fix is that every time that I start sway, hyprland and also the alpha of cosmic is that I get a new ~/.cache directory created in my home that contains a mesa_shader_cache directory.

Btw in the middle of writing this post I just ran into another bug, thunar for some reason decided to steal my key presses from the web browser, and even though I had the browser window focused as I have sway configured to change the border color of the window with focus, thunar was like nope wtf.

Thank you all for the help, ended up opening a bug report at sway: https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/8191

I'm trying to mount one of my SSDs on my systems but it gives me this error when trying to mount from File System: "Failed to mount "New Volume" - No object for D-Bus interface." If I go into Gparted and check the description of the device in question it gives me this: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 3). Failed to mount '/dev/nvme0n1p2': Input/output error NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE! The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was made to NTFS by this software.

Failed to open '/dev/nvme0n1p2'.

$MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 3). Failed to mount '/dev/nvme0n1p2': Input/output error NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE! The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was made to NTFS by this software.

Unable to read the contents of this file system! Because of this some operations may be unavailable. The cause might be a missing software package. The following list of software packages is required for ntfs file system support: ntfs-3g / ntfsprogs.

If I run fsck -l in the terminal It returns this:

fsck from util-linux 2.40.1 e2fsck 1.47.0 (5-Feb-2023) ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks... fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/nvme0n1

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> or e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

/dev/nvme0n1 contains DOS/MBR boot sector MS-MBR Windows 7 english at offset 0x163 "Invalid partition table" at offset 0x17b "Error loading operating system" at offset 0x19a "Missing operating system"; partition 1 : ID=0xee, start-CHS (0x0,0,2), end-CHS (0x30,254,63), startsector 1, 4294967295 sectors' data

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Edit: I have since solved this issue with the help of @d3Xt3r@lemmy.nz. For anyone having a similar problem, the comment thread that led to the eventual solution is down below.

I wondered, Browsers work really well, are already there anyways, have all the GPU stuff etc already dealt with. They also have portal support so Wayland works great.

It could use the Browsers screencast ability on all platforms, and run with Javascript and WASM.

The stuff could be installed in a local Podman container and thus also work natively on Linux.

Do you know an app that does this, client-side?

Thanks to the actually helpful people:

screenity, GPLv3, has some nice features

recordscreen.io some random webservice, the recording is supposedly done in the browser. Proprietary.

due to reasons I only have my tbb/ff bookmarks saved as jsonlz4 files, 10 backups.

Ideally, I could recover all those including the structure, but Id settle for the urls (and hopefully the names).

thanks

Hi everyone!

Today I tried to install KDE alongside Gnome to give it a try on Fedora on something else than a virtual machine.

For a reason I can't understand, the terminal couldn't finish the installation of KDE as something failed. Despite all of this, all the KDE apps were installed and Plasma is appearing as an option on the login screen under Gnome and Gnome Classic. Still I couldn't launch KDE plasma and nothing was happening after typing my login.

I took it as a sign that KDE isn't for me, especially because I'm 99% happy with Gnome.

So I removed KDE via the terminal and the remaining apps via the software center. Sadly, there is one app called "Centre de bienvenue" or "Welcome center" from KDE that I can't remove. Nothing is happening when I try removing it.

I tried removing it via the terminal, but when I type "dnf list installed" I can't find it as there are too many packages. Could anyone help me?

I also tried « dnf list installed » with the words « welcome », « bienvenue », « kde » and « plasma ».

Hello everybody! I can say I'm a newbie at Linux. Wanted to ask about Linux' task viewers. On the famous task viewers such as bpytop, htop etc., can viruses hide from them? Excluding the injected codes, can virus & tracker/logger softwares hide from classic task viewers of Linux? Do they show all kinds of services and running tasks?

upgrading xubuntu to 24.04, fresh install, but I'd like to copy the output of both dpkg -l and history to a usb stick.

About history: will it copy all commands I executed on all tabs? I work with several tabs simultaneously.

ETA: thank you for all your input, problem has been solved.
