In case anyone is curious on my 2020 election logic: I was basically so tired of neoliberals thinking that Biden would automatically close the border camps and end gun violence when the recent Democrat stance has always been closer to… thoughts and prayers and inaction. Is that less evil than neon Hitler? Of course. With more distance from both America and neoliberal Biden fans, I can see that now. But for a lot of people, like past!me, being fervently pushed to do A Thing with overly lofty promises OR being guilted into doing The Thing yields opposite results.
I’m neutral on there being a community for it really. But then I’m someone with a US citizenship who hasn’t voted in around 5 years because I’m not living in the US anymore, and that upgrades voting for a lesser of two evils from “minorly depressing annoyance” to “majorly depressing and confusing hassle”
I’ve also been kicked from communities of US citizens living elsewhere for saying I’m not inspired to vote despite the difficulty because I didn’t think it would cause a meaningful difference who won (this would be… circa 2020 elections I believe).
I’ve since grown beyond this sentiment for various reasons. But I probably would have grown faster if I was able to voice my concerns about voting in the current system without feeling like I was a heretic.
Tbh, after typing and thinking a bit, I WANT this community here for the same reason I think groups like doomers should be welcomed here. We can’t have the productive discussions that lead to understanding and change if we exclude people who would otherwise be willing to talk and work with us. And yeah, maybe a set space legitimises not voting. But I don’t think that’s a really huge concern honestly.
Moving to a city with a tool library. For an annual £20 fee I can borrow any of a myriad of power tools. Currently using an orbital sander for some DIY, previously borrowed a hedge trimmer for the garden, it’s freaking great.
I’d be down but I require my own personal bucket of thumb drives
While I don’t feel like this shills IKEA that badly, i wanna thank you for giving me the term “fast fashion of furniture” because I had yet to find a way to explain why I fucking hate IKEA furniture
(Caveat that fast fashion/furniture is a complex, awful issue when we’re paid in pennies and still required to have clothes and also like sleeping in beds. But I fucking hate when it’s unnecessary)
Good point in this context (of Texas), moreover it'd be WAY more useful in places higher up latitude-wise. It gets dark REALLY early here in Northern Scotland, and stuff like this would be way more tangibly useful.
Though also, being from Texas, I just want kids going outside there... at all.
It’s not super obscure or anything, but I want Vocaloid to get more love. Especially non-Miku voices.
queerness intensifies
That's a good plan, it might be tricky with international transfers... but maybe I can set my mom up as a "collection point" and have her transfer money to me once it's been gifted. Though I might be overreacting about international-ness, I WILL be there in March to celebrate baby and I can just deal with American Currency Issues then.
That's a good point on internet literacy. I do have some older relatives who might not be able to figure out the weirder list sites. Or, geez, international money transfer...
I will consider starting a parent group! I'm 100% awful at reliably checking in (As evidenced by my responding to everything here a week later) but I don't mind modding really.
Haha fair enough on picking battles... I'm already prepping for how the heck I'll ensure they're well educated. I work from home, and I work a 4 day week, but even then I think my dream of home education would end me.
This is super important, as is emphasising that “walkable” doesn’t mean “you must walk”. I have seen disability activists (of which I consider myself one) calling walkable cities ableist because they find the idea hostile to disabled people who struggle to walk or wheel themselves long distances.
Don’t get me wrong, it pissed me off to no end to hear that argument because I fucking hate cars and also car-centric cities are ALSO inherently ableist. But it was also a wake up call to me that we can diversify our outreach further.
