If say, someone in Beehaw wanted to interact with Lemmy.World, they’d have to make an account on Lemmy.World or some other instance that hasn’t defederated

I still don’t really know why I should be on lemmy one vs world vs beehaw vs ???

For the most part it doesn't matter. It's like Reddit, but instead of one single Reddit that contains every single Subreddit, there's a Reddit Alpha, Reddit Beta, etc. that each have their own sets of Subreddits. If you have an account on one of them, you can still visit the other ones and subscribe to their communities, except if Reddit Beta decides they don't want to interact with Reddit Alpha, they can block the other domain and then the users of each one can't interact with the others. That said, if you are a Reddit Alpha (or, lemmy.world) member and you don't want to miss out on what's going on in Reddit Beta (or, beehaw.org), you can create a separate account there using the same email.

Like I said, for the most part it doesn't matter because by default all of the Instances (or Reddits) allow free communication, but the admins of any particular Instance can decide to block another Instance (defederate) because there's no central leadership, it's an Instance by Instance thing.

If you wanted, you could have a separate account for every single Instance, but unless you're trying to get around a specific defederation (like accessing Beehaw), it won't matter which one you're signed up with.

I'm new here, do you know if lemm.ee has been defederated either way?

[–] hotdogcostanza@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

It was doing the same thing for me but I checked my email and there was a verification, once I completed it my registration went through. It didn't actually tell me it was sending an email which is probably a flaw but it seems that's the missing piece.

lemm.ee said it was newcomer-friendly and I was a newcomer so bingo bango there I went. I suppose I can always join a different instance if I need to but I'm still just getting a grip on this place so I'm good for now.

They are still public on reddit right now so I don’t know if it’s a good idea to create an alternative here already.

Reddit's Reddit. There's no reason to worry about what they do or don't have. If you want to make one, go for it!

I totally get the sentiment (I'm coming from reddit, I've interacted with these people) but let it go. The dicks can have reddit. From what little time I've spent here, Lemmy seems so much more civil and respectful, and I think we should do everything we can to keep that positive energy flowing.

Reddit going to shit is disappointing, but since we've got a great alternative here there's no need to remain emotionally invested.

I just came here because I was looking for a reddit alternative but it feel so good to see a civil forum again. Reddit used to be better (signed up in 2011, time flies) but anymore it just seems like people talk past each other. It's bad enough that every thread has to be an argument, but I see people trying to argue against / correct opinions that are the same opinion they're expressing, it's insane.

I'm brand spanking new here but I'm really excited, I've dipped into a handful of threads and everyone just seems kinder all around :)

My understanding from the announcement post was because those are two large instances with open registration, and they want to be able to better vet new users to make sure they're not trolls
