I'm starting to be grateful to Reddit for giving me the nudge that I needed to explore the fediverse. I did have a look at Mastodon a while back (and I may have even joined an instance there, I'm not sure!) but was overwhelmed by not understanding it. I think being part of an exodus where there is lots of advice and support being given specifically for us is really helpful in making me feel like this is somewhere I'll stay.

I've managed to get it to work, my force closing the app and then reopening. I'll check out the communities on your instance though!

Does this only work with the instances that show in the drop down list? I joined mander, but when I manually typed that in (mander, mander.xyz, https://mander.xyz) it just says that it's not a Lemmy instance - I'm 95% sure that it is... But I'm still a slightly confused noob!

Cool thanks. I'd be ok with waiting for the response before deleting my account. I might give that other option a go as well. Once I've got all my comments in a spreadsheet I might then realise how pointless keeping them is!

Yep, most of my friends don't use Reddit 'because it's too confusing'. They stick to FB and Instagram, even while moaning about capitalism and corporates. The sad fact is that the corporates have the money to make their UIs super easy to use. Plus a lot of people only want the connections to other individuals from their social media, they're not interested in something broader than that. I'm hoping the format here keeps the bots away, that's been another nail in the Reddit coffin for me. It's become a site filled with bots commenting on botposts.

Was going to say, I joined meander.xyz as it seems to have a good mix of tech, science, and environment / nature stuff as well. When I scrolled through it was the instance that most resembled my subreddit list (except for the cats. Is there a cats instance?!)

Is there any way of downloading / exporting my comments? I know it sounds daft, but there's some of my early posts about personal stuff that I'd like to keep. I couldn't find anything in my account settings (first time I'd logged on to the actual website in a long time ha)

Honestly, I feel like my time with Reddit is done now. You know how when someone breaks up with you and you're in shock that it's over but then you start reflecting and realising everything that was wrong with the relationship? That. I feel like Lemmy, and the fediverse, is a really interesting alternative way of doing things, I'm not the most tech savvy (or the least) and at nearly 50 it's a bit harder for me to pick up new concepts than it was 20 years ago, but I'll get the hang of it, and I actually think that this will end up being a positive change for me. There is so much wrong with the corporatisation of the internet, and this does feel like a viable and genuine alternative to that.

Did they ever publish the starting time, or did it just start? It seemed to have happened while I was asleep. Not that I'd have stayed up for it ha.
