Lots of angry folks out here; hard to get people involved when they see the "big contributors" going around brigading with no capacity for recompense, reporting or otherwise. I think we could get things moving a lot faster if we got rid of the downvote altogether; copying the Reddit way of doing things is... not great.

Distros like Ubuntu or Mint are great go-tos, but if you're interested in a rolling release, I'd suggest OpenSUSE. That said, there's really no "wrong" distro these days; Steam runs on pretty much anything, and with it comes Proton. NVidia is a bit of a pain in the arse, but I'm running that everywhere here with few problems. The platform has really evolved over the last ten years or so.
I can't imagine why. As much as I love the fediverse and what it stands for, it's barely a blip on anyone's radar at this point.
At some point, maybe. Back when I was running my own Mastodon instance, things were pretty much in this same state, but lots of other things have improved.
I mean, in Russia, anything is possible, but in any country that respects the rule of law, you're a citizen if you pay taxes.
Ah, the old "contrails/chemtrails didn't exist when I was young" argument. Yes, they did; you didn't look up when you were a kid.
The Telegraph is probably one of the blandest news sources on the web. I've never once heard them described as "extreme," in any sense.
Noice.
Name checks out.
I honestly don't think that it will ever get big enough for billionaires to even take notice. Even if we get 10% of the total social media traffic, which is a massive number in and of itself, the sharks are going to be fighting over much larger stakes.
If the fediverse does somehow manage to get large enough to attract the attention of the pigs that run the farm, I suspect they'll just clone the (open-source) code, make their own instance running on another protocol, and throw their weight around to get everyone moved over there.
Relying on the judiciary or the legislature is a bad gamble.
It's easy on some instances to click a name, then click the down arrow on everything they've ever posted. I have a couple of stalkers that are hounding me in this way currently, and there's no way to make them stop. That kind of nonsense makes people want to give up and go somewhere else.
