I’m no birdologist, but if you’re watching wild birds I believe you can describe your current act as birding.
birding
A community for people who like birds, birdwatching and birding in general!
Feel free to share your photos and other birding-related content here. If a photo you post isn't yours, please credit the original creator! Additionally, it would be appreciated if the location of the sighting and a date were given when a photo or question is posted. You do not have to give the precise location, something like "Northern Idaho, June 2023" or even "North-Western US, June 2023" suffices.
Shit, you don’t even have to see them. Birding by ear counts too!
The trees filled out way too early this year. It's already to the point where most of my birding is done by ear. Silver lining is that there's insects to look down at now while listening.
True! There was a time my father would get home from work and just listen to bird songs CDs. Just seeing his joy and enjoying hearing nature myself made me consider field recording too
I like birding by Merlin, go for a walk, have Merlin on in your pocket, concentrate on the looking and spotting as you walk, then when you finish you get a surprise long eared owl notification.
One of the things I love about birding is you can do it pretty much anywhere. All (not captive) birds count.
Unless you see a roseate spoonbill off it's migratory path, it's just sparkling voyeurism.
i love this photo
Thanks, I'm glad you like it! "Bird portraits" are beautiful, but in my opinion birds free in open space are cool, too!
Sure! Also: !crows@lemmy.ml
Oh nice! There's some great content there. I just subscribed to the community. Thanks!
Flatirons?
You're right. That rock in particular is the third Flatiron
I'd wager 90% of birding identification activity consists of seeing/hearing the same common birds for the umpteenth time from distances too far to easily photograph. That farmer in the meme would call it "honest work." And he's probably looking at crows, too.
Definitely. I was so happy to hear a red-winged blackbird earlier this week. Couldn't get a good photo of it, but I still got home feeling happy about it somehow. As he would phrase it, "it ain't much, but it's honest work".
Yeah it is still birding.
