A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

Many people still work 9-5.

Observe your coworkers carefully and see how many really work 7 hours per day.

[–] HopingForBetter@lemmy.today 11 points 7 months ago

I definitely would argue most people don't ever work 8 hours a day.

Even when I was scheduled in a factory, I had 10-15min here, 30min there of downtime waiting on the line, going poo, being told to change posts, watching people drop pallets and then everyone scrambling to pick up the spill.

That's why I'll always advocate work from home. Get your shit done, and get on with life.

I work 8-5. They say my lunch is unpaid but I'm salary. Fucken bullshit.

You lucky bastard, getting paid 24 hours a day

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

A salary is something The Man gives you to give up on your dreams.

[–] tobogganablaze@lemmus.org 16 points 7 months ago

8 to 5 seems much more common where I am.

[–] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 7 months ago (1 children)

But I do, acrually. As do many with office jobs?

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Every office job I’ve ever worked has been 8-5

Can you tell me your industry so I never go into it?

I always thought 9 to 5 was the actual standard american working time. I also thought it was weirdly late.

So at what time do Americans actually work?

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I mean, I'm at work from 8 to 5, but the hours where I actually do work are closer to 9 to 5...

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

7:30am to 4pm with 30 minute lunch break.

It is an American thing. In France it is usually 9 to 6 with a 2 hours lunch between because we like to have fun.

[–] CodyCannoli@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

I work 9 hour days with a 30 min lunch 6:30 - 4:00, Mon - Thurs. Then Friday is a half day, 6:30 - 10:30, its kind of growing on me. And if I feel like it I can just work a full day Friday and get easy 4 hours of overtime.

I'd love to work 9-5, I'm more like...6:45am to 9pm :|

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 7 points 7 months ago

If it isn't 9 to 5 then why would you call it a 9 to 5

[–] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 5 points 7 months ago

7-3:30 most days, 5-1:30 others. I love it.

[–] Starb3an@sh.itjust.works 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I work 3pm-11pm so I always say I work the evening shift.

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

I can see why you’d say that

[–] sizing743@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 months ago

I literally do

[–] TheDubz87@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

630-5 here. Of course, all of our office folk do, in fact, work 9-5.

I'm not American, what did Obama do to weaken workers' rights ?

[–] weariedfae@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Yeah and in that movie those gals had a paid lunch hour WITHIN that 9-5 timeframe. Can you imagine? Damn that would be nice.

Every place I've ever worked most people who worked 8s worked 8-5 with a 1 hour unpaid lunch. In fact, 8-5 is what is considered business hours in my industry.

[–] Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

I used to work 7 - 3:30 but now that I can choose my own work hours I prefer not to start till 8

[–] grrgyle 1 points 7 months ago

It might not be 9-to-5, but it can still be a 9-to-5.

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 0 points 7 months ago (2 children)

And that's for the people lucky enough to be able to work 8 hours a day, I'm 5a-6p lol

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

I do about 10am to midnight five days a week. Fortunately my job is really easy.

[–] nac82@lemm.ee 0 points 7 months ago

Quit. Maybe you can find some luck.
