Urban Dictionary has helped me with so many words over the years.

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 33 points 7 months ago (1 children)

now that Wiktionary has the definition of hot carl, urban dictionary is redundant πŸ™ˆ

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 19 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Possibly misapplied from hot carl "a cheap red wine enema, usually involving Carlo Rossi Merlot".

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 22 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I'm a middle-aged nerd so I have zero clue what the hell any of this means and I refuse to find out

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 28 points 7 months ago (1 children)

blue waffle was around the 90s.

It's a picture of diseased feminine genitalia

Must be a repressed memory, then

[–] deweydecibel@lemmy.world 28 points 7 months ago (3 children)

Urban dictionary only works when the people using the terms go there to define them and upvoted the definitions.

And young people nowadays don't do anything online if it isn't an app.

The iPad baby generation is shockingly technically useless

[–] Kase@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Tbf I thought urban dictionary had an app

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 11 points 7 months ago

Surprisingly-maturely themed

[–] Deebster@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 months ago

I keep seeing stupid, seemingly very person-specific definitions get the votes, stuff like "John: a really sexy, clever boy that all the girls want to be with"

[–] FiniteBanjo@lemmy.today 13 points 7 months ago

It was about to be the sickest rap single in a decade.

This is a buzzfeed comic, so the source for most of their content.

I dunno but it's cartoon better have a little tin cup and be begging - they are aggressive AF with trying to get donations. In general, but especially if you ever give them money.

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

They sorta have to be aggressive because it's damn near impossible to get people to pay for online services nowadays. Everybody expects to get everything for free, but also nobody wants to see ads (for a good reason too, mind you.)

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works -3 points 7 months ago (3 children)

Yeah, I wish they would push a different model. I think the charity model is likely unsustainable long term. Quality contributions to the information should buy you some access and perhaps everyone gets access to some basic info on entries but more in depth data requires a micropayment perhaps.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

It would get infested with bots writing articles and other bots upvoting the quality status. The people with resources to do that wouldn't have any interest in telling the truth.

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Unfortunately that'd probably kill it ded; like I said, people are really loath to pay for online services.

Kagi been doing well. I think tides are shifting

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 months ago

PAYWALL WIKIPEDIA?!

How dare you sir!

They take heat for fundraising like they’re on the edge although they have full coffers. Hopefully it’s sustainable!

"Previously Known As Sweary Mary's Dictionary Of Filth", lul

[–] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 7 months ago

Especially considering urban dictionary consists almost entirely of shock humor and isn't really a good resource for you know, actually understanding people.

[–] EmoDuck@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

A thesaurus is just a dictionary remixed

[–] CaptnNMorgan@reddthat.com 8 points 7 months ago

Dictionaries have definitions. I think most thesauruses are just lists of words
