The visual effects are still good for the same reason the visual effects on the OG Jurassic Park are still good: they knew when to use CGI and when to use practical effects.

Paul Verhoeven also did Robocop and Total Recall before this movie. Regrettably he hasn't done anything as good, since.
I remember a child (A CHILD!) walking out of the theater with his dad. That poor kid had the thousand-yard stare, and almost definitely PTSD.
Starship Troopers is funny and a great piece of political satire, but it’s also violent as fuck.

It is ab bit trashy, but the acting is good , the plot is great and the subtext is also very engaging.

The acting is not good, especially Denise Richards. Michael Ironside was outstanding

On a related note, the OVA adaptation of Starship Troopers from the 80s (Uchuu no Senshi) is worth checking out, too.
I did the same thing! A friend of mine mentioned that the movie had a huge uptick in streaming recently due to Helldivers 2. I don't know where he got that info from, but I'd believe it.
I did the same and had the added bonus of getting my wife to watch it for the first time. And then I went diving after and it was just... Right.
