Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Putin had merely been answering a journalist's questions on the subject and restating the already well known circumstances in which Russia would theoretically be forced to use nuclear weapons.

Peskov also drew attention to the fact that Putin had said in the same interview that the idea of using tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine had never crossed his mind.

Remember when Putin said that he had no intention of invading Ukraine? His word is completely worthless

Well, it's not invasion. It's "special military operation".

Then who prevents EU from doing "special defence operation"? ๐Ÿ˜…

Now, I'll grant you, I have ZERO knowledge of Russian and so can only work from translation, BUT...

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-warns-west-risk-nuclear-war-says-moscow-can-strike-western-targets-2024-02-29/

"(Western nations) must realise that we also have weapons that can hit targets on their territory. All this really threatens a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons and the destruction of civilisation. Don't they get that?!"ย

Seems unambiguous...

He meant new, clear weapons.

People (including you) seem to forget the context for why the Cold War was a cold war.

Notice: '...we also have...'

He is referring at the precarious nuclear effective capabilities Russia have compared to Nato countries. Ofc western headliners will write NUCLEAR WAR IMMINENT.

hahah, right.. because he has no control over the questions they are going to ask him

shit even in the US we cant get politicians to answer spontaneous questions, wtf you think is going to happen in a de facto dictatorship??

I'm skeptical this was actually taken out of context. Trump had an interview about two years ago where he leveled this exact accusation against Putin. I really recommend watching this short clip for context, it's still hard to believe most Americans aren't aware of what was said here.

Whether it's Russia, or anyone else who's a nuclear power, or any other country or terrorist organisation that has access somehow to a nuclear weapon - why does it matter if they say they won't use it? If shit hits the fan, or they go crazy, they will use it

No. Look at the Cold War, especially the Cuban Crisis. There were a lot of voices on both sides openly calling for a first strike, and the cooler heads prevailed.

India and Pakistan are both nuclear armed and neither has pulled the trigger.

As for Putin, think of it this way. The people who told Vlad that the Ukraine invasion would be a walk in the park are the ones who would actually pull the trigger. Those folks were robbing the army blind to pay for dachas and harems; do you think they'll risk their Paris apartments and yachts to keep an old man happy?
