Hello! I'm looking for any game recommendations on GOG -- especially anything that's on sale! Tell me about your favorite few games that you have on GOG, or maybe some gems in the rough out there. I've seen a few threads on Steam lately, so it feels appropriate to me to look for some love on one of the smaller game systems. I'll mention a couple of my favorites, but feel free to mention anything you like!

Rimworld - An alien-planet civilization sim kind of game. I've gotten many hours out of this one. And with some mods and DLC... oh man. I might be ashamed to see how many hours I've played it.

Northgard - I think you'd call this an RTS. Super rad, wish it was longer. I'll swing back around and re-play the whole campaign sometime. I just now noticed they have an expansion pack, so maybe I'll get that soon.

Sid Meier's Railroads - Railroad sim. Another one that I've dumped a ridiculous number of hours into.

Faster Than Light (FTL) - rogue-like spaceship game?! I don't know how to describe it, but I loved it.

I also recently picked up Starship Troopers: Terran Command and Graveyard Keeper, but haven't taken the time to play them, yet. I have Stardew Valley on GOG -- Not an all-time favorite, but definitely got my money's worth and had fun with it.

A few I've had my eye on but would love to hear outside opinions: Patron, Space Crew, Mars Base. They look interesting, and probably any little nudge would get me to buy and try.

Oh my gosh, if you like Metroidvania stuff, play Ori and the Blind Forest!

Even as someone who usually isnt a fan of the genre, this was fantastic.

[–] liminis@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I’m still playing through it, but was really impressed at how much emotion it so far has managed to wordlessly convey. Definitely a special game.

I literally just posted about a few of these in another thread. :)

Decent: Freespace and Freespace 2 are the best Space Fighter - Dog-Fighting Tactics games I've played. They still hold up to this day. And the voice-acting is great.

Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2 are also solid games, although more in the silly corner. Dig out a dungeon, build rooms to attracts creatures of the dark, train them and go to war against the foul knights and kings of the overworld.

The OG Fallout games are always worth a mention. Fallout and Fallout 2.

If you're into old disturbing point and click puzzle games Sanitarium is a classic.

Or a bit more laid-back storytelling with mysteries, maybe? Then Oxenfree is worth looking into.

In the FPS category I recommend the Metro games. Well, the two first ones anyway. Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. Stealth is optional, but advised. :p

I'd also be amiss not to mention Soma. It's a scary game and a solid mindfuck at the same time. Approach with caution.

That's my list for now. I hope there's something in there you can use. :)

The Freespace games are legendary in that genre. Probably second only to TIE Fighter.

[–] Hexorg@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How do you play fallout 2? I always have weird double-screen with wrong colors everywhere. Tried different video cards too.

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

GOG's version works for me straight out of the box. Other than that, there's the High-Res patch and the general Patch. They are quite important on modern machines.

If you play on Windows, make sure both patches are installed. Then screw around with the High-Res patcher a bit, hopefully you can find the right setting. It will probably take a few attempts.

If you play on Linux, I sadly can't help you as I never got Fallout to work in it. :/

[–] Hexorg@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Interesting. I could never get it working on windows 7 nor 10.

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Hmm... Compatibility mode, maybe?

I remember having trouble with Win 7 as well.

If you're thinking about the Fallouts, don't forget all the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, Planescape Torment), and Neverwinter Nights, and Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2.

And Shadowrun (Returns, Dragonfall, Hong Kong).

There's a universe of amazing isometric RPGs out there.

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Indeed. I just ran through what I had on GOG.

[–] Chemslayer@beehaw.org 9 points 1 year ago

I love RimWorld, and I love DRM-free, but RimWorld on GoG is a mistake.

Instead, buy RimWorld directly from Ludeon. Then you get both DRM-free files from them (to enjoy in the fallout bunker), AND a steam key (so that you can easily enjoy the metric boatloads of modding content on the steam workshop).

If you’re a fan of Star Trek, they have quite a few excellent titles. Personal favs are Armada II (RTS), Bridge Commander (Ship Sim, even better with mods!), and Elite Force (you’re a Security officer on Voyager, FPS made by the Quake developers.

[–] Muela@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 enhanced editions. Several hundred hours of quality RPG. Bought them several times already

[–] RickRussell_CA@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I have all the Infinity Engine games on... so many platforms. And CD. And DVD. And iOS, and Google Play...

[–] freakrho@programming.dev 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

gog isn't my main platform for games (mainly because there's no good support for steamdeck) but some games I've played that I liked are:

[–] delial@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 year ago

Frostpunk is phenomenal! It sucked up all my free time for a couple weeks.

Oxenfree is gorgeous.

[–] festus@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

You can usually pick up Terraria when it's on sale for about $5. I haven't played it in forever but I enjoyed it at the time and apparently it's only improved since.

[–] Maven@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 year ago

Loom is one of the greatest games of all time, I'll die on that hill. Such a shame the sequels never materialized.

[–] people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 year ago

Some of the most popular games are on GOG - Tomb Raider (classic) series, Prince of Persia series, Baldur's Gate series, The Elder Scrolls series (including Skyrim) and several others. Modern titles apart from The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077 include Horizon Zero Dawn, A Plague Tale, Disco Elysium and Psychonauts 2. But perhaps the best known titles on GOG are indie platformers like Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest and Terraria.

[–] rancidity9480@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

My library is mostly Sierra and LucasArts adventures. Also a ton of D&D titles I haven't touched.

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds is an all-time favorite.

For the Sierra titles, I'd highly recommend the first Gabriel Knight.

Swat 4 Gold

Tactical FPS where you command a SWAT team in some really atmospheric missions. The gold standard for games of the sort. Ready or Not is a modern game that takes a lot of influence from it.

Blackwell Bundle
When Rosa Blackwell’s only relative dies after twenty years in a coma, she thinks the worst is over. This all changes when Joey Mallone, a sardonic ghost from the 1930s, blows into her life and tells her that she is a medium. Whether they like it or not, it is up to them to cure the supernatural ills of New York in this critically-acclaimed series of point-and-click adventure games.

GRIS
A sandbox puzzle game by Zachtronics, the creators of SpaceChem and Infiniminer. Build factories that assemble products for your alien overlords, and try not to die in the process.

Infinifactory
A serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death. Players will explore a meticulously designed world brought to life with delicate art, detailed animation, and an elegant original score. Through the game light puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional skill-based challenges will reveal themselves as more of Gris’s world becomes accessible.

[–] phi1997@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

You got the descriptions for Infinifactory and Gris mixed up

[–] Icarus@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I just picked up The Last Stand: Aftermath, and have been really enjoying playing that game.

A few of my absolute favorites

  • Battletech

  • Witcher 3

  • Parkitect

[–] sic_semper_tyrannis@feddit.ch 1 points 1 year ago

Spirit Farer & Machinarium are must haves

[–] all-knight-party@fedia.io 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

SWAT 4 is still an excellent tactical shooter the likes of which we don't see anymore, short of Ready or Not, or Doorkickers, if you count that.

[–] alehel@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

I really miss this genre. Makes me sad to see what Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six have turned into. Back when I was playing Rogue Spear, I never thought I'd ever see team Rainbow fight aliens!

Was really pleased to discover that the original Ghost Recon on GoG runs really well. Was also able to get their copy of the original Rainbow Six to work after a bit of tinkering.

I don't play too many games, especially new games, but some old classics I've seen on GOG are:

  • Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Literally the best 4X game ever invented. Its so much fun and still looks surprisingly good for its age.

  • Diablo. I haven't bought it on GOG yet but I've played it a little bit and it definitely holds up. I love Diablo 2 and D1 is a great precessor to it.

This last one isn't on GOG, but it is on itch.io:

  • Dwarf Fortress Remastered (not sure if that's the right title). Especially if you like Rimworld, it might be worth picking up the game that started it all. I just got the new version the other day and the added graphics and controls really help to smooth out the learning cliff. I can't even begin to say how many hours of stories I got out of the OG. I highly recommend picking it up.

It's a bit rough around the edges, but you (or someone else) might enjoy Genesis: Alpha One

You fly a space ship (well, mine usually look more like stations that can also move), across different life-infested solar systems. The main gimmick is that you build the station yourself out of different modules.

So when your scientists come back from planet surfaces, with some spores on their suits, you might find pockets of ewww hiding in the vents of the station you made yourself. You have/unlock multiple times ways to make sure that the infestation stays relatively isolated to, say, the landing bay. But even with those, you'll find yourself doing a lot of first-person vent-crawling to figure out where that disgusting crab-thing just came from.

Plus, it's a rogue-lite with some permanently unlockable progression. There are multiple player factions you can unlock and there's a NG+ mode, but I found myself not replaying it too much (even though my one played campaign was quite fun). Still, I sunk a good 16-20 hours into it, I think.
