Just no.
No offense to Mr. Cage and his fans, but he's like Jeff Goldblum. They cannot hide in their roles, nor be defined by them.
(IMO, of course, and no doubt the internet [and the money] will talk louder than this old crank.)

Exactly .... give room for new roles and characters to up and coming new actors.
William Shatner was a minor actor in the 60s until he became Captain Kirk ... same with George Takei, Nichel Nichols, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly .... their participation in Star Trek established their careers.
I love the new Trek because it keeps introducing us to new faces and new personalities that we've never seen before.
Cage has already done lots and he'll probably keep doing more because of his already established fame. He doesn't need to be on Trek .... maybe a short cameo but not a main character.
Stand aside and give someone else a chance.
They're both nuts. Entertaining usually, but I have no idea how any director manages to give either of them any sort of direction.
When an actor becomes the memes made about them (as such), it must be surreal.
While not as big as your examples, I think Matt Frewer is similarly affiliated and his TNG episode turned out ok. I think it could be done, with the right script.
I agree the script matters and maybe it could be done without being sucky. Not that I don't love Cage but... I think Fewer is a bit better actor. Maybe not to quite the level of disappearing into the role like some do but still.
I think Michelle Yeoh was pretty well known by the time Discovery arrived and beyond initial recognition I kind of forgot all about who was behind the character. Likewise I forgot all about Whoopie Goldberg, it was just Guinan. (Maybe give Cage an iconic hat? Lol) David Ogden Stiers did well right? (I don't remember that episode very well).
I'm not sure if it would be as easy to blend Cage into a show.
I like your hat idea! :D
I mean If you hide him under make-up I think it could work. Christopher Lloyd was an excellent Klingon despite being very recognizable.
This is so cursed
First of all, I don't care how good of an actor you are (and I'm lukewarm on Cage), you shouldn't get to have anything more than a cameo on a show just because you love it.
Secondly-
In that 2023 Yahoo interview, Cage praised Chris Pine’s portrayal of Kirk as well, saying he thought the new J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movies were “outstanding.”
If you like the J.J. Trek movies, fine, but to call all three "outstanding" does not sell me on him being the big Trekkie he says he is.
Whenever I think that I see a terrible casting choice I think about Sandler doing Uncut Gems.
Uncut Gems was literally wrote FOR Adam Sandler. The entire movie is based on him playing that role.
Except from Slashfilms interview with the directors:
"It was always Adam," said Benny. "It only works if you root for him, and that's why it had to be Adam."
Yeah, it might have been designed for him but he also demonstrated the absolute fuck out of his ability as an actor. Nick Cage might be a bit of a meme, but if he does the work and takes it seriously it could be great.
I apparently fully misunderstood your original comment. I thought you were doing "when I think of a bad blank I always remember the WORST blank and everything else isn't as bad in comparison". My bad for misunderstanding.
That's honestly not super unheard of, lots of writers write with an actor in mind.
you shouldn’t get to have anything more than a cameo on a show just because you love it.
Not that I disagree but this made me think of Guinan that was created just because Goldberg loved Star Trek and wanted to be in it.
I don't think that was right either. I'm just glad it worked out.
As a cameo? Hell yes, it would probably be hilarious.
As a recurring character? No thanks, let new young actors take the stage.
two episode feature character at very most
I don't even want to see him in a cameo. No thank you.
Not even if he's stealing the Federation Charter?
Well, maybe if they load the Enterprise full of criminals and he hijacks it...
Or if he comes in with a secret plan to use cosmetic surgery to switch places with one of the main cast.
Both of those seem like a bad idea likely to ruin the audience's immersion in the show. I think he could be a one episode guest star as, like, a Ferengi or something though
That's my main qualm. I'm not into celebrity culture and it just breaks any realism for me.
Might as well have someone walk across the screen with a sign saying "this isn't real you're just watching TV."
I’M A BIG, SEXY CAT
A Caitian bridge officer. That's the perfect role for him.
Perfect! He already kinda looks like an alien!
Cast him as a heavily make up covered alien .... and his voice sounds like clicks with a language that only speaks in metaphors
Do you think Mick was pissed when he found out no one would know it was him or liked it more?
Thank god someone else remembers Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac ... I was going to mention him and this costume but I didn't think anyone would remember or even know who Mick would be.
If they had only given the fish costume a set of drumsticks and a drum set, we would have appreciated him more.
It may be the weirdest cameo of all time.
Definitely ... I thought it was hilarious when I first read about it years ago. I saw the episode in the 90s on cable TV and never thought anything about it. Then read that it was Mick years later and never forgot it. Love Fleetwood Mac and I love Star Trek and yes, it is completely off the wall that Mick did that without any fanfare or notice ... I just reviewed the episode credits (ST TNG: Season 2 Episode 19 'Manhunt') and the intro and ending credits don't mention him at all. Even back then someone somewhere would have noticed his name in the credits.
He needs a supporting cast to pull it off, I’m thinking Pedro Pascal… ideally as a bounty hunter.
I want him to play a Collector. Maybe collect one of the Discovery crew since someone displaced in time is pretty rare.
