It still needs to get past the House. Despite what the news is reporting, the 'extremists' don't have enough votes to tank the vote unless all the Republicans are cowed by them. I think something like ten sane Republicans would be enough to get this through.

I'm all for an audit and restrictions on spending, but first we gotta get our House in order. Before that, aid for Ukraine.

Only 300 million for ukraine.

[–] Airazz@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

That's how much the US was spending in Afghanistan per day. Every single day. For twenty years.

Oh geez, it's a drop in the bucket compared to what it should be. Something is better then nothing, but this frustrates me.

While I'm glad we are increasing pay for troops and aid for Ukraine, I believe that our defense spending is incredibly out of control. We are spending egregious amounts of money to ensure that we could murder the entire world instead of spending that money on more worthwhile things. I'm not saying cut all defense spending but even a 30% cut would be more than welcome.

Bro wait one year and the whole world is going to be fighting.

Especially when 3rd world countries start collapsing because of climate catastrophes and we just gave these massive migrations.

That it's of course also dependet on weather the Chinese get bolder or no

Salaries are a tiny fraction of the military budget. Majority goes to overpriced military contractors. I think the bigger issue is the Pentagon has failed 6 audits in a row.

In a Row?

Try not to fail any Audits on the way to the parking lot!

And how much was in the bill to house the homeless woman who asked me to buy her lunch last month? Or to feed her? Or to get her modest clothes or healthcare? Or for my healthcare, for that matter?

[–] Airazz@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Her money was pocketed by private insurance companies. Blame them, not a poor country that's under attack. US has way more than enough money to feed and house everyone, even if they quadruple the spending on Ukraine.

They are spending more on your healthcare than most developed nation spend on theirs per citizen, it just gets stolen on its way to you. US healthcare is not underfunded.

Republicans allegedly want to give those funds to the Border Patrol and to build the Great Wall, not to feed your theoretical homeless woman.

Actually they don't really care about that either, which is why an additional $14 billion for border security isn't enough for them.

That sounds like you want socialism...

That's like asking how much of my grocery bill goes towards my car insurance.

This specific bill is specifically for military funding.

Good thing our military can get richer while the civilians starve.
