Welp, time to start looking for alternatives...

Can't blame the dev for wanting to cash out on his work, but I am not going to keep using apps that will get ridden with ads and trackers.

YOU Apps are quite good

The f-droid version should be ok for now, but if you installed this from the malware distribution channel aka the Playstore I would recommend to deinstall them before the next update hits.

You can turn off automatic updates for now, that's what i've done until i have replacements, either forks of these or alternative apps

New organization at https://github.com/FossifyX, looking at the discussions it looks like it's off to a good start

I understand the developer, but the complete lack of communication with the community is appalling. and even the subsequent app updates to ad-supported/tracker-packed versions is just disgusting. i understand why tibbi burned out, but the sale process was handled in extremely poor way

Being burned out is no excuse to outright betray their users and principles. For the height of irony read this post by them from August...

"However, we want to assure you that you are not at risk of anything similar with our apps. Instead, we bet on transparency and a fair approach to users ... It is a small one-time fee that will ensure you use our apps forever – with no ads and no access to your data" 😂😐

The good thing is that unlike the old QuickPic fiasco, here the apps are GPLv3, so these are 100% gonna be forked, still gonna see if i don't keep all the eggs on a single basket

A fork has already been created by the other developer - https://github.com/FossifyX
