Elemental just doesn't look like a Pixar movie to me. It looks kinda like a lower budget animated movie. I've heard that the movie looks nice when you actually watch it, but I don't think it shows well in trailers. I'm guessing that could be a reason for the low box office results.

Elemental just doesn’t look like a Pixar movie to me.

the premise doesn't help, i think. i know it's not that weird in the context of previous Pixar movies but as applied here it just comes off as clunky like Zootopia did with its allegory (and Zootopia is almost certainly a better movie than this will be), and as a generally played out and not super interesting spin on this genre of allegory too.

Yeah, to me the little anthropomorphic blobs feel like rehashes of the characters from Inside Out, with a dash of the spirits/ghosts from Soul, but the premise of Elemental isn't anywhere near as interesting as those other two.

Makes sense. Neither of those films looked great and Ezra Miller being himself sunk the flash before the previews even showed

minor fyi: ezra miller uses they/them pronouns--even major outlets fuck this up a lot so i cannot fault you for not knowing this

Oh shit i had no idea! Corrected

I can't blame people for staying away from The Flash, the moment they decided not to ditch Ezra Miller I knew I wasn't gonna pay a dime to go see that movie despite Keaton and the role it plays in resetting the DC Cinematic Universe. Which isn't to mention that the trailers didn't do much to pitch more than a fairly mid-superhero movie coasting on crossovers, which sooo many people are burnt out on these days.

I'm definitely going to take the family to see Elemental next week. I'm also waiting for a couple other folks to come back from vacation to go see The Flash next week also. From everything I've read, The Flash is actually great. And Elemental is getting 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I also really want to see Asteroid City.

Asteroid City, The Blackening, and Elemental are the three big movies in theaters i want to see, but I won't have a chance to until next week.

Just got back from Elemental. Really well done. Great movie. Very sweet.

[–] neotecha@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Good to hear. So many people have written off Elemental, saying the trailer makes it look generic, like Pixar has lost their touch. Thing is, Disney and Pixar have a recent history of making boring or generic trailers, only for the movies to be great.

Unless it was met with poor critical reception, i would probably see it anyway

Yeah, it was visually stunning for sure, and the story was a great representation of the immigrant experience. Kind of a story that's been done before (Romeo/Juliet, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, basically any other story about children of immigrants wanting to honor the sacrifices of their parents while introducing culture mixing, etc.)... but really a sweet story. The water family was hilarious, and Wade, the water guy, is kind of the sweetest person ever created. Really creative ideas about how literal "fire people" and "water people" could exist and what they could do. Reminded me a lot of the Futurama episode about the water people planet. That had to be a big inspiration.

Have you seen Across the Spiderverse?

[–] GuyDudeman@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Not yet! Really want to see both those movies. They look visually stunning.

I think The Flash will have success on international markets. I live in France, and many scandals don't reach the ears of the average citizen. Tabloid stuff doesn't cross their radar. I'm generalising here, of course, because there are people who are in the know, but then there is another chunk of the population who don't know.

Another example I could cite is Johnny Depp. I teach at different schools and in one class of 20 students, aged 20+, I mentioned that it wasn't a good idea to roll out the red carpet for him at Cannes and they were like, "why not? He didn't do anything wrong, it was his ex!"

I then asked what her name is and what movies she appears in.

They didn't know.

Sorry, I digress.

I'm going to see the new animated Spider-Man film instead of the Flash. I'm not a fan of Ezra Miller nor many of the dceu movies tbh.

[–] Mallard@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

And the Spiderverse movies are excellent and creative in their own right!

I haven't seen many DC movies at all, and I don't even care about their trailers. Although this Flash trailer did look interesting, but yeah... Ezra.

I wonder if audiences have given up on DC (bar Batman/Joker) and what that might mean for Gunn’s reboot. At the very least they should wait a few years before releasing the rebooted franchise and it should look drastically different so that when audiences see any promo they understand right away that this is not old DC.

Man, a B CinemaScore?

That's pretty rough.
