I feel like this game kind of came out of nowhere. We got a few small announcements and then nothing major until close to the release date, unlike the insane marketing blitz that was FF15. Maybe I was just out of the loop.

Anyways I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts or opinions about it? I love Final Fantasy games but this one seems so different. Tbf I haven't played the demo, I'm planning on trying it tonight, but I'm curious what everyone thinks about such a major release.

I'm so hyped for this game. Yoshi-P is the only one at Square-Enix who knows what he's doing. We're going back to some cheesy ass faux-Shakespeare localization (yeah I like Final Fantasy XII, don't @ me). We're getting a classic medieval fantasy story with magic crystals and killing god, but you also get to play a motherfucking kaiju battle sometimes. Inject it directly into my veins.

[–] Satiric_Weasel@beehaw.org 9 points 2 years ago

We must protect Yoshi-P at all costs. The man is a treasure.

[–] garretble@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

Nah dawg, FF12 is excellent. Don’t feel any shame about that.

[–] KerooSeta@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

FF12 is my favorite Final Fantasy after 6.

[–] Myaa@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Honestly the way you described it has me hyped too! It seems like a really cool premises and story wise seems like they're going back to their roots a little. I loved FFXII so no judgement here! Also the icon battles look so intense! I think it's a pretty good way of integrating them into and Action RPG, I liked the summons in FFXV but I felt they were a bit too static and didn't quite fit into the combat system that well.

Aside from all the other praise people are giving it (which I completely agree with) I have to say, the ability to pause during cutscenes and access the database or whatever they call it to read about the characters involved in the cutscene is truly revolutionary.

[–] KerooSeta@beehaw.org 6 points 2 years ago

Pausing during cut scenes is huge.

[–] sijmen@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 years ago

Hadn't noticed that yet, that's awesome. Wouldn't be the first time I looked at a cutscene and didn't have a clue who some person on screen is

Most of the time, when I play a demo, it gives me reasons not to buy the full game. This is one of the few exceptions. I can only hope now that the rest of the game ends up being as good as the demo.

[–] EeeDawg101@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

The only complaint I have that I've experienced in the demo is the performance mode can't keep up with 60.. it seems to drop a lot all over. It's not the worst, at least we have the option for the performance mode but really wish it could be a bit smoother. Hopefully they can improve this aspect of the game soon.

[–] spiget@beehaw.org 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've played through the demo a couple of times now. I think this one might be special.

Final Fantasy has always been different with each one, this one is fully action based, but I think it reminds me quite a bit of 6 which is my favourite.

I've not been this excited for a game in years! 😀

[–] Myaa@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Ooh! That has me pretty excited then! I've been very curious of how they were going to proceed from FFXV. It was such a weird development cycle and took forever, and then it's release was kind of mixed. I'm hoping they have a nice polished game with a really engaging story.

[–] spiget@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yep! 14 was a car crash at launch too, and 13 also took forever and felt half finished. Same as 12 really 😬

From the demo at least, this is a cohesive fleshed out story with interesting characters. It also seems to play really well, and it's gorgeous.

[–] Myaa@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

Yeee! That has me hyped! Im cautiously skeptical but sounds like I'll be picking it up day 1. Too bad the PC port is TBD at this point.

[–] ampersandrew@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I think I will enjoy it when it comes out on PC in two years.

The fact that this is the state the franchise is in is precisely why I won't be playing it any time soon. I don't want to completely reconfigure my gaming setup to accommodate moving my bedroom PS5 to my desk to play long story titles like this, so I get to play the waiting game instead. Bonus points if they go for secondary Epic exclusivity, because the HITMAN III launch was such a disaster on PC that I'd really rather not buy anything else from there.

It's just an unnecessary hassle and, as someone who only recently got into the franchise with XV, it's actively preventing me from bothering to really stick with it instead of just playing another Yakuza or something.

Edit: Like I'm sure it's not an issue for 90% of people but I literally cannot be assed to go out of my way just because they chose not to make it convenient.

[–] gogozero@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 years ago

look into PS Remote Play. i play my PS5 on a chromebook wherever i am at home to not wake the baby. the official app is fine, but the unofficial client Chiaki has linux/android/windows clients and has better performance and options. latency is as low as anything else on your LAN

[–] OldPotBestSoup@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

This is what being a patient gamer is all about. I don't own a playstation. I resent Epic for making pc excusivity a thing. I will buy it on steam and enjoy it once it will go out on it. I am voting with my wallet.

There is no shortage of amazing games out there, so put it on a list and forget about it for now.

I waited for Hades to go out on steam and it didn't keep me from immensely enjoying the game. I played my first Yakuza game a couple years ago and it was the same. Let's be patient together my friend.

I finished the demo this morning and pre-order the game. It's light, fun, easy combat similar to Nier Automata or Kingdom Hearts mixed with a good story and voice acting and beautiful visuals. It is definitely very different than previous Final Fantasy games, though.

Demo blew me away. Last time I got chills like that from a game was the intro to Last Of Us back when it launched on PS3. Been craving a narrative driven game but didn't expect this one to be so "mature." Really loved the intro and if it reviews well gonna pick up a copy on launch day.

Also I come from frequenting reddit (sorry for the trope), but I saw tons of coverage for the game the last several months. Yoshi P and crew have been pretty good at showcasing what this game entailed. Partially why it's been on my map as someone who usually isn't interested in FF.

The demo has me fully sold on the game. Really love the action combat they have in this one and think it feels way better than what they had in XV. I’m intrigued by the story so far and was pleasantly surprised that the demo gives you a good amount of story with both of the modes offered. All in all I think it’s one of the best demo’s I’ve played in a while and can’t wait to get my hands on the full release.

[–] Pegatron@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'll be waiting to see what the consensus on the story is. Because I quit FF15 25 hours in after realizing I had no idea what was going on and no idea who anyone was, since the story was fragmented across multiple media.

[–] beforan@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Play the demo if you can. I think most people who have will give the consensus the story is good.

I've played tens of hours of 15 several times to try to like it, and I still find it so hard to care.

I understood more of what was going on and cared more about Clive and his situation after the first 15 mins of 16, and then the rest of the demo just made more intrigued.

[–] Pegatron@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

That's good to hear. I remember getting to a point in 15 where there's a long cutscene of a city invasion, and I realized I didn't know what city it was, who was invading, or why. Nor did I know what relation it had to the segment I had just played. So at that point I had enough.

[–] polarimetric@beehaw.org 6 points 2 years ago

I’m REALLY excited. The demo was incredible. I love the battle system—I really enjoyed FFXV’s battle but did feel like it could use a bit more variety, and that’s exactly what they’ve done with the Eikonic abilities. The story and characters seem compelling. The graphics are gorgeous (after playing the demo, I went back to FFXIV and it was a rough contrast lol, though obviously not a fair comparison). I’m an FF optimist and have found a way to enjoy basically every game in the main series—I actually enjoyed the entire XIII saga, which I know is a very unpopular opinion—but this one really feels special.

You weren't out of the loop, SE was keeping it on the down low. Partly because there have already been two major production delays (COVID, invasion of Ukraine) and it hasn't been super clear when it would be ready for release. The producer is also doing double duty being the producer for 14 (if increasingly in name only) which probably isn't helping anything.

[–] Myaa@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

Ah that's good to know! It felt like it went from announcement to radio silence to boom it's releasing in a month. I've forgotten that it's already been 7 years since FFXV dropped!

[–] Kaldo@beehaw.org 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Trying not to get sucked into the hype since I only game on PC and it will be years before it's available here ;(

[–] Myaa@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

Oof, hopefully it comes sooner than it took FFXV to get ported. Although I appreciate that they release eventually I wish they would just drop it cross platform and forget about the whole console exclusivity BS.

[–] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

My thoughts, it's not FF6 therefor I am still unhappy. I want my sprites back :(

[–] iChukau@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Sprites are at the bottom right of the menu! :D

[–] Myaa@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Oh that's cute!

[–] spiget@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

FF6 is so good! Amazing soundtrack, Locke, Terra, Celes, Edgar, train suplexing, world of ruin, Kefka...

[–] nii236@lemmy.jtmn.dev 3 points 2 years ago

I mean, I haven't even played 15 so I guess I was out of the loop in the first place. Battle system looks great tho

[–] siberianluck@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm very excited for it! I like action more than turn based usually, so it's a welcome surprise for me :-) Personally, it was off my radar because I kept reading XVI as XIV (which I don't really care about)

[–] VioletteRei@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

Funny because it's the same guy who directed both games

[–] DaughterOfMars@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

I haven't had any interest in FF games since the original 7, but I played the demo after I saw it on the store just for fun. I think I'm gonna buy this one.

Other than some gripes and annoyances, it's fucking fun. Closer to dark souls combat than the weird ATB stuff they've had for a while.

The writing is surprisingly okay, albeit with some cringe lines here and there and and overall trope-ey lore. Some of the exposition actually didn't feel totally out of place!

My biggest concern is about grind, as is the case with much of the series, but we'll see I guess.
