In case anyone hasn't tried this yet: Go to ChatGPT and describe the kind of song you're looking for, along with a few examples, and ask for recommendations.

It's not perfect, but I'm honestly surprised how good it is at song recommendations. Especially if you ask it for "more niche" bands.

I don't know how to describe it tho

[–] kakes@sh.itjust.works 9 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Here's a simple one I just tried, to give a idea:

I like songs such as:
Astronaut, by Mansionair
Inner Light, by Elderbrook
Someone Else's Dream, by Absofacto

I'm looking for upbeat songs, with maybe a touch of melancholy.

What songs do you recommend?

ChatGPT's response:

Great taste! For that upbeat yet melancholic vibe, try "Take a Slice" by Glass Animals, "Heart Attack" by BRONCHO, and "All Eyes On You" by St. Lucia. Let me know what you think!

Note that "Broncho" doesn't exist - I assume it meant "Bronson". Normally, I would regenerate the response here - once an LLM starts getting things wrong, it will tend to amplify that going forward.

From here, though, you can check out those songs, and if they aren't what you're looking for, you can say why you liked or didn't like them, and get new recommendations.

It's interesting, because this seems like one of the things AI could be really good at, but no one seems to be implementing it. Instead we've got entire startups around using AI to do things it can't do with plenty of buzzwords in tow.

I've thought about creating a website for this, but I need to figure out how to break even on the costs. Not really familiar with that side of things.

Not AI powered, but I really like Music Map for finding new music.

The site lets you enter a band or artist and shows you a map of similar artists, with the ones near the center being the most similar and the ones towards the edges of the map being less similar.

Nice, thanks for sharing!

My friend shared a similar site with me a while back, but I can't find the link. If I find it, I'll drop it here.

but no one seems to be implementing it

Except Spotify and it's "AI DJ" It's pretty decent most of the time I've been using it for a few months now.

Is this with Bing or what?

[–] kakes@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

Bing does use ChatGPT, but I personally use it from OpenAI's site directly. You do need an account, though.

Exactly lol, is that a superpower for musicians only?

[–] Feirdro@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Then you realize you can’t enjoy music like you did when you were 22, and nothing will ever sound as good again.

[–] Johanno@feddit.de 18 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Powermetal all the way. And then some epic ochestra music. And then you listen to some Tetris music and think that it is great to live in a world with that much variaty.

[–] Deceptichum@kbin.social 4 points 11 months ago

Nah you just gotta push yourself to find new stuff you like.

[–] lugal@lemmy.ml 11 points 11 months ago

And that's where AI comes in

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Finding The Dolls of New Albion scratched that itch for me. Across four albums, every song in the tetralogy hits that sweet spot of making my brain release the good chemicals while not being so similar as to get old

[–] Nepenthe@kbin.social 5 points 11 months ago

Hey, we don't know each other but I love you. I've never seen anyone talk about that series in the wild. About to introduce someone to it soon if they will allow, because my personal hell is too roomy

[–] theletterw@lemm.ee 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I love synthwave because it basically solves this problem for me 🙏

This is not the greatest song in the world, this is just a tribute

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Can you remember the greatest song in the world though?

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

the greatest moment of my life was when i found ratatat and then shortly after the dodongo album by Loiue Zong

it's exactly what the tweet describes

[–] Trex202@lemmy.one 3 points 11 months ago

Omg thank you! I love Ratatat. Dodongo fits so nicely.

[–] Candelestine@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What do you mean I've watched every single black hole video on youtube...? I demand more.

two months pass

Okay, nevermind. Really, I swear, pls stop...

[–] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 months ago

I was so desperate once in this exact situation that I asked an llm for an answer

It was about as garbage as expected

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmings.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Me when trying to decide on a movie to watch.

You know what's really similar? Watching the exact same movie that you love for the 12th time.

[–] Rev3rze@feddit.nl 2 points 11 months ago

Paris, Texas by Ry Cooder fits this bill for me personally. It's too short but I can't find anything that captures that exact feeling anywhere.

[–] AgentGrimstone@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

If anyone knows of a song that sounds like Save Your Tears by The Weeknd, lmk

[–] lorrainelambert@lemm.ee 2 points 3 months ago

Anyone here got some good musoc that kicks ass?

I want more of the feeling I get when listening to Bon Iver's CREEKS and Imogen Heap's Hide And Seek.

Yes I've listened to other things they've done. No, nothing else is the same.

Changing the tempo and pacing changes the entire song, so "digitalized vocals" isn't the same thing.

My life is so hard. Woe is me.

getting pissed off because i can't find 17,000 more songs that sound exactly like the one i am enjoying but aren't that song exactly but make me feel the same way so i can continue the precise vibe. i have the hardest life anybody has ever had btw.
