In Lemmy my user is @arne@posta.no. Is there a reason for this double usage of @?

I would like to suggest that we start using tilde (~) as the prefix for usernames just to make it a bit more readable.

Meaning my username would be ~arne@posta.no

It's a the double @ seems to be a general fediverse thing.

Looks like it's because you're a @user (inspired by Twitter maybe), as opposed to a #topic or a !community

I understand that, but I believe duplicating the @ in a username is confusing. With ~ we could have #topic, !community, ~user and @server

@ is simple and widely used. Just don't break things that work.

I agree that the double @ is off-putting.

I agree it looks a little strange when we're used to seeing email IDs, but Mastodon uses the same username format so there is a precedent. It might be too difficult to change such a fundamental feature in Lemmy at this point to make it worthwhile.
