Turn it over to the Ukrainians now?

[–] nimnim@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

“Should the asset ultimately be forfeited to the Crown, Canada will work with the Government of Ukraine on options to redistribute this asset to compensate victims of human rights abuses, restore international peace and security, or rebuild Ukraine,” reads the announcement.

Look at Canada! Making aggressive international moves, didn't know you had it in you.

the Canadians, and through them the West and the Rules Based International Order, are showing that they will dispense with the thing supposedly at the foundation of liberalism, the sanctity of private property, if you happen to be on the right enemies list that day

nope, white countries maintain that your investments are safe there regardless of your politics or national origins.

now that they are seizing property based on politics, what makes that any different from any other country that expropriates property as needed?

Not sure where my reply went.

Russia has stolen airliners from the west that were under lease. If you act like an animal then you get treated as one.

russia doesn't pretend to be a rules based international order™ country.

nice tu quoque, i thought the west considered themselves better than the rest??

[–] random@feddit.uk 0 points 1 year ago

That’s not really new and a fair confiscation since Russia has stolen multiple airliners.

I'm surprised it took that long though. Did laws regarding these seizures recently change in Canada?

[–] nimnim@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, in 2022, Canada modified its sanctions legislation, enabling the redistribution of seized and sanctioned foreign assets to provide compensation to victims or contribute to the reconstruction of a war-affected foreign nation.

What's in it? Random people's suitcases from a year ago? 🤔

[–] nimnim@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a cargo plane, so no it didn't have random people's suitcases! Apparently, the plane arrived in Canada to deliver a shipment of COVID-19 rapid tests and hours after its arrival, Transport Minister announced Canada was closing its airspace to all Russian aircraft in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

I like that they waited juuuuust long enough to get those test strips.
