We're truly living in the golden age of farming sims. I can't even play them all. I might try this one though

Yeah, I think Stardew Valley is to thank for this revival. And then Animal Crossing: New Horizon pushed it to peak.

I'm honestly quite surprised at the pricing of this one. I've been looking for a nice cozy multi-player game aside from Stardew Valley and this caught my eye but having to buy two copies at $60 is quite steep... I'll be waiting for reviews :/

I agree, specially when the game is from a new developer.

I think this game would benefit from a demo. Unless it gets some raving reviews, most people are just going to wait for the sale.

Why do developers feel like they need to add a combat system to their relaxing farming sim? It just seems to go against the spirit of the genre.

I think there are few possible reasons:

  • They want to add as much as they can, so that it attracts to widest possible demographics.
  • They are following Stardew Valley, arguably the game that reinvigorated the genre.
  • Have you played Rune Factory games? From the maker of original Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons? They are pretty fun, and they have combat too, with many different weapons and magics.

That being said, I agree with you, not every game needs to have every single mechanic in it.
