That is fucking ridiculous and a disgrace. It was shit in Qatar in the middle of winter and it'll be shit in Saudi. What a joke. The levels of bribery and corruption in world football now is incredible.

ESPN is reporting that Australia dropped their bid, so SA was the only bidder.

Australia is saying they dropped their bid because the Asian Football federation backed SA and therefor wouldn't vote for Australia.

It's a disgrace but the world cup in Qatar was one of the best ever lol, believe what you want but that's how the most of the world remembers the football of that WC

Most? According to what survey? I don't know of a single person that thought it was, overall, a good WC. I'd wager most people would put it down as one of the least memorable in living history. It was dreadful, and players came back to the Premier League knackered and injured. Worst WC ever.

I didn't watch a single minute of the Qatar or Russian WCs, not even highlights, but I was far more upset at not watching the Qatar WC. From what I read online, most people were loving the matches on the field for how exciting they were (which has nothing to do with Qatar). I read reports that the fan experience was OK, safe and calm but not a party vibe.

Yes, it sucked for club soccer that the players came back tired and injured; but the games were exciting since the players were in mid-season form. Yes, it sucked that a country like Qatar hosted it. But the person said "remembers the football of that WC," not the overall experience of the WC.

EDIT: To be clear, I don't think it was the best or worst. I didn't watch it, so I can't really judge. But a ton of people online said it was very good.

Show me a survey that it was the worst then Mr I need a source, the final is literally described on Wikipedia as one of the greatest of all time

The final was a great match for sure. It's just all else associated with that tournament was terrible.

Yes fifa love money and bribes remember and Saudi Arabia don’t care and have lots of money. It’s win win for the two of them

[–] emogu@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Wonder how much they had to bribe as the only nation to even submit a bid.

[–] readthemessage@lemmy.eco.br 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They probably had to bribe other confederations

[–] jmd_akbar@aussie.zone 2 points 1 year ago

No no... Not bribe... Encouraged...

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

The bribes had to go to Asian federation countries. Australia dropped their bid because the federation officially backed SA, so they knew they couldn't win.

Do you think female fans from across the world will be able to come and enjoy the world cup without being harassed by the morality police?

They're not really a thing anymore. Saudi is dumping money trying to expand their tourism and tech industry and that means paying a ton of foreigners to go there

[–] ABCDE@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Do they have it like in Iran? You don't need to wear a hijab in Saudi.

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

This will be received in not a great way.

Yet another winter World Cup, and my only hope is that the country will improve enough in the next 11 years that I won't have to boycott yet another WC.

[–] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I highly doubt SA will improve enough to not be boycotted. They still haven't answered for blowing up the trade center, or chopping up a journalist, among their many list of atrocities

[–] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

They won't, and I'll be boycotting this one too. FFS FIFA.
