I can't tell if this is sound medical advice or not. Seems legit, apart from perhaps alcohol might be too rough on the ear drum.

It is. In many insect extraction videos the doctors do just that.

Could use warm olive oil, that is supposed to be good for clearing wax out too. Might leave you with a dose of the dreaded oily ear though
