Closing the signups actually sucks for genuine users, but there was no other option to defend against spam attacks. Because of the distributed nature of the fediverse it is harder to defend against these type of bad actors. Good to know some initiatives are taking places addressing this challenge

Any plans of enabling registrations back? Why don't you enable email registration, maybe that could help.

It will take some time. I am personally not a fan of email as registration requirement. A dedicated spammer can easily circumvent such requirements.
