The carbon emissions driving the climate crisis and rapid arrival of an El Niño event are to blame, researchers say

Global temperatures soared to a new record in September by a huge margin, stunning scientists and leading one to describe it as “absolutely gobsmackingly bananas”.

The hottest September on record follows the hottest August and hottest July, with the latter being the hottest month ever recorded. The high temperatures have driven heatwaves and wildfires across the world.

September 2023 beat the previous record for that month by 0.5C, the largest jump in temperature ever seen. September was about 1.8C warmer than pre-industrial levels. Datasets from European and Japanese scientists confirm the leap.

Reminder: Conservatives did this.

Conservatives (including neo-liberals) have stopped normal people from passing legislation to address this for decades. They are working for corporate masters, but they did this.

Even with the new data, conservatives are still aggressively causing even more global heating and are mocking us while they do it. They will never stop unless we physically force them to stop.

If you aren't fighting conservatism, you aren't fighting climate change.

I disagree. Conservatives are not the cause of climate change; capitalism is.

Both liberals and conservatives are bought and paid for by special interests.

Hoping for our liberal demagogues to solve these issues by sticking to "civil", "non-violent", or "state-approved" methods will do nothing but refine the capitalist system as it currently operates.

The only way forward is to call out climate change for what it is: violence imposed upon working-class people. The time for civility has passed - it only plays into the hands of the ruling class as they spend decade after decade filling the atmosphere with pollution. The liberals and democrats aren't going to save us. Only we can.

I don't think we are in disagreement. Our definitions of "conservatives" may be slightly different. Conservatives include neo-liberals. Neo-liberals and everyone to the right of them have been aggressively protecting their corporate benefactors for generations. It's possible to have an egalitarian culture with some regulated, properly checked capitalism. It is not possible to have an egalitarian culture with conservatives protecting capitalists and preventing regulation of that capitalism.

I also agree that there does not appear to be a peaceful solution. The cure for this disease is removal of conservatives (including neo-liberals and all others who would protect capitalist oppressors) from our population.

Inaction is just as bad as action the wrong direction. How many are apathetic and have given up? How many are fat and happy with their bread and circuses?

I am not disagreeing with you by any means, but we have far more that are content with business as usual.

The hottest September so far.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We're also having the hottest October so far. I'm in Montreal Canada and it's usually around 15-20°C this time of year. Instead it's nearly 30°C. I'm actually running the AC right now. It's insane.

I'm in New York and I just turned mine off today; had it running since Sunday. Our normal high is around 19°C (65 Freedom units) but for the past 4 days it's been closer to 30°C here as well.

Yup. El Nino just started, so by next summer we'll be right in the middle of it.
