Hello fellow Far Side fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.

The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Its surrealistic humor is often based on uncomfortable social situations, improbable events, an anthropomorphic view of the world, logical fallacies, impending bizarre disasters, (often twisted) references to proverbs, or the search for meaning in life… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side

Hope you enjoy and feel free to contribute to the community with art, cool stuff about the author, tattoos, toys and anything else, as long it’s The Far Side!

In the words of General MacArthur, "I SHALL RETURN!"

While Dan is great...it is possible to know history without him.

Now you are just blowing my mind.

What if I told you it is possible to actually read the books that Dan used as source material to create his podcasts...

Actually have been reading this fantastic book called Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. MacArthur has an excellent set of cameos.

While I like Neal Stephenson (favourite being Diamond Age) I haven't read Cryptonomicon.

His novels do contain riffs on history and persons from the past I wouldn't rely on his works for solid historical knowledge.

Of course, but the entertainment value is unparalleled. You'll see if you ever get around to reading the book, which again, I highly recommend.

Thanks for the recommendation. It is on my To be read list...but that is a very long list.

I feel like with most of these far side comics, including this one, I must be missing some reference or subtlety that makes it funny. Can anyone explain this one to me?

[–] generic@iusearchlinux.fyi 10 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

It's a joke about the (fictional) city of Atlantis that sunk into the ocean.

There's not anything to get, mostly. They're a little funny because they have people doing somewhat relatable things in insane circumstances, and then they're funny on a meta level where they're kinda dumb, so you feel dumb for finding it funny.

I really don't get how popular they are here. A small and active community?
