Photographer: Okay what screams childhood? Hmmm. Pioneer wagon wheel…and MASSIVE cigarettes.

And in the 80s if a kid asked to bum a cig, people would give him one.

Now they just ask if you've got a cable they can charge their vape with

I carry spares around, just in case.

When your stepmother smokes Camels and you get used as a subtle jab in the divorce.

calvin harris' first big song was "acceptable in the 80s" and I think about that phrase a lot

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Let's make a list of what was acceptable in the 1980s?

-Smoking while holding your newborn. -Smoking in your hospital room. -Smoking on planes.

Smoking with kids in a car with the windows up.

Smoking in McDonald's with McDonald's branded ashtrays

Don't forget the little coke spoon!

-Letting a nerd rape your drugged girlfriend. I grew up in the '80s and this one disturbs me the most in retrospect. Like, this seemed totally normal and acceptable.

Oh the 80s were full of casual sexual assault that women and girls were supposed to tolerate. This is why I hate the conservative bellyaching about how kids don't need smartphones; you have NO idea the danger we ended up in as largely unsupervised kids in the 80s.

My parents worked together at a Bar/restaurant in the 80's. from the ages of 3-10ish i was basically raised at the bar of this restaurant. Id snack on cocktail peanuts and maraschino cherries all day and the bartender would make me virgin cocktails whenever i asked. The place was always full of people smoking cigarettes and cigars up front and smoking weed/ doing other stuff in the back. Looking back, im like wtf were my parents doing??, but that was just normal back then. If I wasn't with mom and dad, id be with grandma and she smoked like a chimney and would drag me to bingo or some other gathering where all her friends were smoking too. Wild times man.

No decade since then has had such a personality as the 80s did. They were truly a magical era of child neglect and poor parenting.

At least there was Atari/Nintendo and home computers already, as primitive as they were. I'd hate to have been born in the 70s and earlier. Sounds boring as fuck for a kid.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I was born in the 70s but I don't really remember much of it, like it didn't have a personality the way the 80s did. Everything was burnt orange and the TV really sucked.

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Everything was burnt orange

Now would that be the actual decor, or the nicotine/tar stains, or a bit of both?

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

A little of both but a lot of it was the shag carpeting.

A famous man named Dennis Hopper once said "The 90's are gonna make the 80's seem like the 50's" and he was right

[–] lewis@lem.social 3 points 1 year ago

26ish years and we're back in the 50s

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Wait, in what way?

[–] Relo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think that sometimes huge props are used in movies or commercials. Maybe this was once used in a Malboro ad...

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Quite possibly. 80s portrait photos did have some odd backgrounds though.

His mother sent him to the store with a note saying its ok that he buy them and that the smokes are for her.
