you know what I'm talking about, right?

Bands where, on paper, when you do the math, you should totally be a fan! "If you love X, you'll definitely love Y!" yet something about the band... it... it just didn't hit right with you.

For me it's Radiohead. Weird, proggy, alternative, quirky, check, check, check, check!

But nope. Dead inside for them. Just nothing happens when I listen - no matter how many times I tried. Sure, a song here or there I like, but otherwise total "meh" for me. Heartbreaking!

This is the answer, but I came here uncertain of who I might write. I've never been into them, but the hit all the right buttons, as you say.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

it's frustrating! I WANT to like them!

[–] mbgid@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Radiohead. I just can't get into them, and I've really tried.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

haha! I JUST wrote the same!

[–] mbgid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Haha I just saw. I was sure I was going to get hate for this take, too.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

no hate! Can't help what you don't like or can't connect with... brain science!

I tried a few times with some of the indie darlings like Wilco and Neutral Milk Hotel. I didn't hate them--some okay songs here and there--but I didn't want to start a new religion to them like a lot of people seem to feel after hearing their albums.

Nirvana. Overplayed wayyyy too much back in the day. Still can’t stand hearing it again.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I like them, but definitely moved on shortly after their big breakthrough.

Motherfucking Devin Townsend. I’m into all of that, on paper. But my toes curl up and I get the urge to strangle a cat when I hear his music. Horrible, horrible, pompous and overvalued shit music.

There, I said it 🀣🀣🀣

[–] sik0fewl@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Listen to Strapping Young Lad instead πŸ™‚.

[–] BzzBiotch@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Heyyy, that guy looks and sounds just like Devin Townsend, but with hair! Are you trying to trick me, internet person? 🀣🀣🀣

I should like Temple of the Dog, but Hunger Strike is SUCH A BORING SONG that I still haven’t been motivated to listen to the rest of the album, even if it’s better than that song.

Edit: I forgot about Audioslave. Sorry, but I do not enjoy Audioslave. This band is not as good as either Soundgarden or Rage Against the Machine, but people have elevated them as if they are at the same level. I just don’t get it. Like a Stone is kind of a cool song. I just can’t get into the rest.

Not assured to help, but try Reach Down. I find that song to be a better starting point for the album. I'm not a huge Chris Cornell fan but Temple of the Dog is in my top albums of all time.

This was my thought too. To me they're just fine. Nothing has clicked for me. I don't ever have to desire to listen to them.

[–] ReallyKinda@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

yeah same, they don’t annoy me or anything

[–] kometes@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Elliot Smith. Too down.

[–] HipPriest@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Sonic Youth. I love artsy experimental rock but none of their stuff has ever really clicked with me.

Radiohead. I think it really boils down to how irritating I find Thom yorke's voice to be. No, I don't want to listen to you whine for 6 minutes straight, thanks though.

[–] xfts@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Sublime. I've just never liked them for whatever reason, despite being big into the 90s alternative scene.

[–] WintLizard@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Arcade Fire. Just never found their sound enjoyable.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I go back and forth (before the problematic issues of the front person). I liked them, but could only take them in doses.

[–] hellfire103@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

FIDLAR. I like together PANGEA, everyone keeps recommending FIDLAR to me, and Last.fm thinks I'll like them; but I just don't.

[–] Anamnesis@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Real Estate. I like every band like them, but for some reason their music just doesn't do anything for me.

[–] krzschlss@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Garage Rock Revival and Post-Punk Revival.

The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, Bloc Party, The Libertines, The National, The Kills, Franz Ferdinand, The Hives, Kings of Leon... I listen to a song here and there from these bands, but never have the patience for any of their whole albums. The only band from these genres I still listen to is Interpol.

I don't know why, but I always felt these are my genres...

The only explanation I have is that these bands just aren't inclined to experimentation and deviation from their own sounds, which might be important for me to revisit those albums...

[–] Cjwii@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Daniel Johnston just too... Weird? Idk I feel like I should love him, especially having lived in Austin for 15+ years, but honestly I don't think I've ever enjoyed a song of his

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I'm a pretty through and through goth kid and just can't get in to their music. Really want to but it just falls flat every time I try.
