Hi all, I'm looking for some Discord alternatives. All I really need is the ability to do voice calls and screen shares. It can be either via DM or channels, I only need to it be able to speak with a few friends that'd be open to moving over. I've tried Matrix/Element but there doesn't seem to be a screen share function. There's Teamspeak but I don't think that's FOSS nor does it support screen shares as well. Any other options? Basically just voice calls and screen shares is all I need, I couldn't care about channels or servers or whatever other functionalities Discord has put into their app. Thanks!

Think the desktop client for signal does screen share but I'll have to check first

Edit: yeah you can heres the support link

Element can screen share, but only when both users are using the desktop client. If one user is using mobile, screen sharing won't work.

Revolt has a really nice UI tbh I hope it takes off

Judging by the screenshots on Google Play, it looks exactly like Discord.

Can you do screen-sharing now?

Do you use Revolt? I've heard mixed things but I'd like to know from a user.

Yes. I host my own revolt server and it’s been great. Features parity with discord is nice so far and username have discriminator!

Oh wow! That's good to hear. I'll be trying it out soon!

Hey just wondering, what communities does revolt have. Any Youtubers on there?

Matrix with Element can really go fuck off. Matrix on Nheko, or Matrix on Fluffychat are way more enjoyable. I know OP already knows this but Matrix replicates the text and image chats/channels/threads/servers of Discord but doesn't have the same parity for Discord's voice chat and screen sharing.

I'm out of the loop and a novice, what's wrong with it?

[–] Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Having Element be the name brand frontend for Matrix is bad, because it feels so... sterile in comparison to every other frontend, which feel fun in the way Discord does.

There's Cinny if you want something Discord-like.

[–] morrowind@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like cinny but it doesn't have any calling features whatsoever at the moment

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

right, I kinda neglected that point :/

What's wrong with Element?

Edit: I just saw your response to someone else with a similar question, myb.

I thought that I read that they recently started requiring a Microsoft/Google account?

[–] shortwavesurfer@monero.town 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Microsoft, google, or github yes. On the main jit.si instance. You can selfhost or use another instance though and not deal with that.

[–] kby@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Uhm, no? I can still start calls on meet.jit.si without logging in.

[–] shortwavesurfer@monero.town 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That is what i read in an article recently. I have not had time to test it myself recently.

I tried it now and could start a call without an account. Am I missing something?

Using the web version

[–] 3yiyo3@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Thats sad :(

[–] sylphio@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

There is also Element Call at call.element.io. I have not tried screen-sharing but it's worth a look.

[–] poVoq 4 points 1 year ago

Jitsi-meet and Nextcloud Talk can do that.

Some XMPP clients can do it for 1:1 calls, but for group calls it is a work in progress and progress has been a bit slow to be honest.

[–] trippingonthewire@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If on mobile, maybe Signal or the FLOSS version known as Molly (Molly assuming you're on android)

[–] gamey@feddit.rocks 1 points 1 year ago

I think Element works well in combination with Jitsi, well or for your need just Jitsi could probably do the job too.
