Not a criticism, but some technical details: In SMB1, Peach didn’t have black eyes. She has transparent eyes that show the black background. It’s the same thing with the Final Fantasy battle sprites, which is why the battlefield was always black. The NES only had three colors per sprite. If you needed more than that, you needed to overlap it with a second sprite using a different pallet. The whites of the player characters’ eyes in SMB2 were done this way, with a second sprite. The NES could only draw so many sprites per scanline, though, so it’s a trick that had to be used sparingly.
