Meth has a large number of useful applications. And most meth users I've known have been comparatively civil, soft-spoken, and fun at parties.

[–] TeraByteMarx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Dread to ask but comparatively to what?

[–] treverflume@lemmy.ml 31 points 3 weeks ago

league of legends haha

[–] jdeath@lemm.ee 5 points 3 weeks ago

look at the meme again friendo

[–] FoxyFerengi@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The people I've known who used meth are great to have on your side in a fight. The problem is they tend to just get in a lot of fights anyway.

Unless you meant "meth user" as people who need Adderall and similar stimulants? That's definitely not the same thing lol

[–] areyouevenreal@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Desoxyn is legally prescribed meth. Adderall isn't quite the same thing, but Desoxyn definitely is.

Which to be honest if you ask heavy amphetamine users amphetamine and methamphetamine aren't that different anyway.

[–] AugustWest@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Desoxyn is legally prescribed meth. Adderall isn't quite the same thing, but Desoxyn definitely is.

Not entirely true. Methamphetamine has two enantiomers, dextro-methamphetamine and levo-methamphetamine. Desoxyn is 100% dextro-methamphetamine, while most street meth will be a racemic mixture containing practically equal amounts of each enantiomer.

Which to be honest if you ask heavy amphetamine users amphetamine and methamphetamine aren't that different anyway.

I would say this isn’t true either. Both impact the CNS is much the same way, but the addition of the methyl group allows for meth to much more easily cross the blood brain barrier, producing markedly more psychological and euphoric effects. Methamphetamine also lasts 2-3 times as long.

[–] FoxyFerengi@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago

This is why a lot of things used in biological processes need to be purified, one of the steps is separating the enantiomers. Chirality in molecules is common but people might not know what it means, especially when it comes to drugs or supplements. Molecules with chiral centers rotate one way or the other (Dextro- or Levo-rotation) , this can be determined in a lab using light waves, so it's called optical activity. You could find L-carnitine supplements in a grocery store, for example. When synthesized both enantiomers are produced, but only one is useful for biological mechanisms. D-carnitine is considered toxic because it can cause the L-carnitine in your body to be less effective, and you don't want your cell metabolism to stop or slow.

I used carnitine as an example, but stereochemistry is really important to understand when it comes to drug manufacture

Also if you give it to soldiers the benefits cant be understated, just ask Aimo Allan Koivunen.

Why would i play League when I can go have fun

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It is fun, that's why so many players play it. The issue is a toxic userbase. But playing in a 5 stack with friends is great, as long as your friends aren't toxic dicks either. You can mute the chat and not worry about the other team saying anything.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

It's the same phenomenon as road rage. You expect certain actions out of people without communicating, and when they don't conform to your expectations, you wonder why they can't just see the most obvious thing (to you).

There are different reasons for each, but very similar feelings.

I don't personally get road rage because driving isn't competitive. But I do react poorly to others raging at me (which is also a childish problem I should get over.)

Game specific diatribe incoming. Stop reading now or forever hold your peace.

Partly it's that I have some unique ideas about how support can be played. Partly it's that I'm absolutely more inclined to support somewhere else if I've lost confidence in my "partner". Partly it's that I'm actually bad at very obvious parts of the game, while it's easy to overlook what I am accomplishing. I'll take too many risks to maintain vision, for example. People get mad when I die stupidly, but don't see how they've had better than professional vision for the entire game. (Because I take too many risks for it, and bad players are even worse at clearing vision.)

[–] sudneo@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

Learning to support others when you realize your carry is bad, tilted etc. is indeed one of the best skills for a support. Providing vision and general support to the one (or two) good players in the game is totally a winning strategy.

Also we don't say "I died stupidly to grant vision", we say "limit testing".

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

Vision never gets appreciated despite securing all the objectives, getting free kills on top and keeping bot safe. Why yes, I play support. How did you know?

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 53 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

First time I ever played, I stated it was my first time. Team lost. Got called homophobic slurs. Never played again.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's like the first time i played TF2. Got called a bot midway through and then booted. Never went back.

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

TF2 players suck but at the same time it's such a good game. Like you'll hear someone spamming the n-word 200 times and you're just like "yeah that's about right" and requeue

[–] arin@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Honestly people should try DotA 2

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

DOTA with friends: Sorry guys I'm still learning to kill steal but that was fuckin great, let's do it again!

DOTA with pubs: Holy shit maybe humanity should just end.

[–] arin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

In pubs when anyone starts being toxic, open scoreboard and hit the mute player button 👌ez

[–] lorty@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You could say the same for LoL though

[–] josephmbasile@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Like chemo?

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

2 cents on this, DOTA 2 is a much more complex game, with almost the exact same soft skills. I hang out in DOTA more ofter, but every year or so a family memeber askes me to patch League and I am able pick it up like an old bike. The extra mechanics such as denying your own team, traditional vision mechanics (purchasable wards) and a different balance philosophy makes it feel like a professional hockey player shows up for their local beer league.

League is a good introduction to MOBAs, but its monitozation is bad, it has a stronger focus on map timings (IIRC dragon can make or break an early game) and most importantly, there is a surrender vote. DOTA 2 does not have that (your queue is a commitment, you cant walk away from games, without being labeled as toxic and being relegated to the bad sport queue), the learning curve is steeper, and while there are no requirements to unlock the roster, everyones design philosophy is that most everyone can carry (pos1) if you try hard enough.

[–] Ediacarium@feddit.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

League players can't deny

[–] hector@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

I don't have anyone to play it with ;(

[–] stinky@redlemmy.com 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

People trying League is the same vibe as people trying meth

[–] jdeath@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago

much improved

[–] SleepyPie@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

League of Legends: Wild Rift is fun and the internet consensus is wrong on this one

[–] puppycat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

issue is you can't really play league without playing with the type of people to play league. that's enough for me to say no thank you, no matter the game mode or whatnot

[–] SleepyPie@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, you are definitionally correct. League players are the type of people to play League.

There are great ways to enjoy League without having to interact with League players. For one, there is the PVE digital card game Legends of Runeterra, which has a really satisfying RPG roguelike mode with long term progression. I have likely put over a hundred hours into this and spent zero dollars.

There’s also a new single player feature for Wild Rift which lets you fight AI opponents trained on player matches. You can edit the ranked skill level of the AI and pick/make them play any champion. There are dozens of hours of good times here alone. Again, completely funded by cosmetic purchases of other players and free to enjoy.

Personally, I think turning off chat and teaming up with players you got along with is more than enough to compensate for the “type of people” issue. Playing with pure randoms in any online game is not great for sanity. But lots of folks are looking to make friends and are good co-op partners if you’re willing to DM them.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

The matchmaking dynamic has ruined a lot of games and LoL is no exception. I do think folks play up the bad vibes on LoL relative to everything from Overwatch to Valorant to fucking Roblox. If you're not going into these games with a group of local friends, you're either going to have a bad time or you're going to be the bad time other people experience.

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Meh it's not 2003, folks aren't accepting of being called slurs for not winning a match, especially while ranked as a beginner.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

LoL has a peak daily player count north of 13M. Its one of the most played games in the world. There's clearly a tolerance for intolerence in the setting - even an adoption of it, as younger players internalize the slurs as appropriate behavior. That's why you see it everywhere. People with foul mouths aren't attracted to LoL. The existing base (which was trained to be shit when they joined) degrades the newest members in turn.

You see the same in games like Roblox and Call of Duty. Without any meaningful admin or internal censorship, the bad actors run rampant and the new players are trained to accept (and then imitate) the miserable attitudes.

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Fairly put, but I was mostly addressing the "play up" line. It's common, and those you.see complaining about it leave. I may have addressed it poorly.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

There's definitely selection bias (LoL loses some number of players on its deplorable culture). But overall, they've been growing their userbase year over year. That's a big reason they don't seem to give a shit about their reputation. It doesn't seem to cost them much.

Lots of social media and big market gaming has this problem of 4chan-ification. Costs way more to police than you can earn from policing, unless there's state regulation (akin to the FCC) on what you're distributing.

[–] SleepyPie@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Roblox aside as I’ve never played it, I wouldn’t call any of these games ruined. These are all popular games with growing player bases and lots of folks enjoy them immensely.

It might just be my personal experience and social group, but I believe toxicity is lessening as more people become self-aware and intolerant towards it. The fact that there are more ways to block, silence, mute, and report now than in the 2010 era of gaming helps a lot too. I also notice that toxic people end up playing with other toxic people, and the rest of the game sorts around them to variable degrees of success. This is what the “honor” system mixed with player reports does in PC league for example.

In Wild Rift I encounter an inter or someone who lashes out in the pre-game lobby with a troll pick maybe 1/8 of my games on average? Can’t speak for the enemy team as all chat no longer exists. So if I have 5 members on my team, that’s 1/40 people who are jerks? That’s manageable imo, especially as the matchmaking system refunds you half the loss if throwing/leaving was detected, and you still have a good chance of winning despite them.

It’s also easier to organize a group of friends both in-client and through 3rd party sources like Discord and Steam than it was on Skype and Teamspeak back in the day.

[–] Sl00k@programming.dev 1 points 3 weeks ago

you're either going to have a bad time or you're going to be the bad time other people experience.

To be fair this can be applied to any multiplayer vs game. Once youve removed your own bad time from the equation it's a pretty fun competitive experience.

[–] HappyFrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago

Wait, slime_ like the person constantly in tomato gaming's chat? Didn't know they were famous.
