I never paid attention to the newspapers, so I don’t know if it’s always like this.

All defending maximum murder or suffering (through genocide or global warming). What the hell is wrong with this country?

If these are the sources of information of a population it’s not hard to imagine the result. I am really hoping it’s just the rich playing with their toys (the newspapers) the way they like, but that it is not really effective in brainwashing the population. That they question what is fed to them.

Anyway, I just thought it amazing and to share my depression with more people. Maybe that’s just every day news and nothing unusual. I imagine it’s probably all owned by the same zionist or super villain or something.

Since the image can’t be read, the one on the left says that if Australia doesn’t support the international court on netanyahuhaha the country becomes terrorist. The second is the typical “people are not supporting my genocide, I’m being holocausted”. The third is asking for harsher punishment for those “fools” destroying the economy and wasting people’s time with imaginary environment issues that could lead to human extinction.

edit. I posted to lemmy.world by mistake. Lemmy is so confusing... edit2. Is the image showing? It didn't show the first try.

Australian news. Defend genocide or human extinction? Or maybe both?

I never paid attention to the newspapers, so I don’t know if it’s always like this.

It's always been thus, siding with the orthdoxy as we slide closee to fascusm all the time.

I did jinx it though, my bad... , thunking Morrison was as bad as it got, before that thinking Abbott was as bad as it giwt, before that Howard was as bad as it got. Niw e look set to have Soud for PM., we're so far down the sewage pipe there's nowhere left to go.

I long ago realised i have little in common with most of my fellow citizens.

"Activists expect leniency"

Fuck that I was prepared for the $22k fine, I wasn't keen on the prison time but it was a risk I was willing to take. Everyone who was arrested yesterday feels the same way.

Fossil fuel billionaires do not contribute to the economy, they rape the earth stealing natural resources and rake in profits with next to no taxation. We stood in solidarity with workers this last week, we're the ones fighting for a better economy for Australia. Chants in support of the Maritime Workers Union could be heard across the channel, Rising Tide wants their future careers to be secure. They are not just tools for profit to be discarded when the earth is destroyed.

And finally I'll always stand up for Palestine, I'm pretty damn proud to have been out there on the water wearing my keffiyeh. Fuck the news media, they've destroyed the nation I once loved and are essentially what radicalized me.

Can we chip i and hekp with some $$ at keast ?

[–] Sasha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

You sure can, there's a fundraiser to help pay legal costs and fines. I fully intend to pay mine on my own, so hopefully this goes towards those who are facing larger fines and need the help.

And now reading this I realise I've miscalculated the size of my maximum fine lol (I'll still gladly cover it all on my own).

22k? Holy shit. I would be so crazy angry. You're being force to financially reward the people destroying your future. That would eat me up inside even if that amount didn't hurt.

So they get rich destroying your future and you have to give them more money for it.

You guys are heroes. I couldn't take that. I'm glad there are people not like me. I would think non stop about a justice I can't make happen. Like some people's heads on a guillotine.

[–] Sasha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm not hero, but that means a lot. I'm just some punk who had enough of lying around depressed and mourning the future I once thought I had. You don't need to be like me to help a ton, just talking to people and sharing news is a huge thing. So many ways you can help from the comfort of your own home, calling/emailing MPs or even just telling your more conservative friends and families how important this is.

A couple of points about the $22k and 2 years in prison, those sentences are 1: Draconian and part of anti-protestor laws and 2: Extremely hard to actually get as it's the maximum, even with priors.

Also we don't reward the cops! The money is collected by revenue NSW and goes towards community programs, so I'm actually pretty happy to pay into that. My fine will be a maximum of $330 because I was charged under a different thing, but some of the 170 arrestees on Sunday are falling under that $22k maximum one.

We are all giving money to those fossil fuel billionaires, tax payers are subsiding ~$14B towards fossil fuels and those fuckers do not pay much if any tax.

[–] guismo@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You have such a positive point of view. It's interesting seeing how different people can be. I would focus obsessively on the part of that money that goes to those fossil fuel billionaires. You are focusing on the part where it goes to community programs.

Though I don't know where it goes. I just assumed it goes to them, like a big part of my taxes that also go to fund the military.

About activism, I've done a fair bit and it affected my life a lot. I'm an old pessimist guy. I just try not to help to make the problem worse now (making sure I don't fund them as much as I can). These things affect me too much. If I had to pay a fine for the activism I did in the past I could end up doing something really bad like destroying my life or someone else's. I'm a little too radical and I end up turning people away from my causes because of it. Nowadays I try (and fail) to not even talk about to people because I end up making them hate the cause.

I posted it here because I think most of the community agrees with it. Circlejerk you could say. If it was on reddit it would just lead to endless meaningless fights and abuses.

[–] Sasha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Radical power is valid, and being angry is extremely understandable. It takes a lot of courage to be able to step back like you've done, I respect the absolute hell out of that.

Believe me I'm not all positive about things, I have my personal motivations and I've been through enough training to know where and when to focus my energy, that's all.

I've been in fights with people too and I'm easily drawn into them, I've honestly only been able to stop myself because I've been through a ton of therapy after some particularly traumatic experiences. I've spent many a night laying awake furious about what's happening in the world. Those subsidies are a particular point of pain for me and I hope to be able to do something about it one day, but participating in and organizing a campaign are very different things. For now, I'm on regen as I take some time to process the last week and spend time with my family.

I do really appreciate your post, it's been a good venting opportunity haha, and amazing to know how many allies there are in this community. ✊

Fossil fuel billionaires do not contribute to the economy

this will be news to the majority of Australians*

Company taxes paid reached a new record high of $26.5 billion and royalties also reached a high of $16.7 billion in 2020-21, contributing significantly to federal, state and territory governments at a time when they needed it most during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The record company and royalties payments are highlighted in an Ernst & Young report commissioned by the Minerals Council of Australia, which also shows that in the last decade (between 2011-12 and 2020-21), the mining industry contributed $254 billion in company taxes and royalties ($142 billion and $112 billion respectively).

The industry in Australia continues to pay the highest average wages, the most company taxes, delivers the most export revenue and is critical to supporting regions and communities – supporting 1.1 million jobs in the mining industry and its supply chains.

I cannot believe you would be silly enough to say mining doesn't contribute to the Australian economy

It's our number 1,2 and 3 highest exports lmao

You are right about the super villain bit although FR is owned by Nine.

[–] guismo@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So it's the same channel i see everywhere that makes me want to throw up. I keep changing channel in places i see that on and people change back, like in gyms. People around here actually like to feel their neurons melting. It doesn't just happen to be the default, it's what they want to see. They go after it.

I don't see much hope for this population.

And who's that guy? He looks like a sad villain. I hope he is very sad. But that might be why he does this. He wants to spread his misery.

[–] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't know if changing the channel in the gym is the kind of activism that will give you the best impression about what hope there is. I know what you mean though. When I dropped out of school and picked up some work as a painter my boss told me to stop changing the radio to Triple J on the job because the builders wouldn't like that kind of music. All I knew was I couldn't handle listening to advertising all day. Maybe that's just some people's jam.

That is Rupert Murdoch. He might be sad. I highly doubt it though.

[–] guismo@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not activism. It just drives me crazy. I can't ignore the stuff I'm seeing and i can't concentrate on anything. If i want to promote some changes that would not be the way to do it. It's just that's it's like someone putting alcohol in my eyes. I have to turn it off or leave. When i can't i just leave.

I thought that could be him but i didn't see on wikipedia that he owns channel 9. I heard much about him but I've rarely seen his face.

I wouldn't doubt he is sad. To be that evil you have to have something wrong going on in your brain or life.

[–] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Murdoch doesn't own FR (the newspaper on the left). It is part of Nine. The other's are Murdoch.

Maybe some noise cancelling headphones can help in the gym. Or maybe buy the Tv-B-Gone and test it everywhere you see a TV. I've always wanted to know if it would work on the huge digital video billboards in the Sydney subway.

[–] guismo@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

Eheheh that's a nice idea. Most places have a switch on the connection on the wall. I just turn that off if I can.

Headphones are not enough. I need to get blind. Or I should just learn to ignore it. I just can't.

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone -1 points 1 week ago

There is no genocide. It's hamas lies.

And I support every single legal action from the courts. I want to see film footage in court, I want to hear legal scholars, I want to hear military specialists, I want to hear hamas testify, I want to hear IDF and Israel government testify.
