Summary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence that Donald Trump’s presidency will hasten the end of the war with Russia, following their “constructive exchange” after Trump’s election victory.

Zelensky emphasized the need for a diplomatic resolution by next year, while acknowledging Ukraine’s challenges on the battlefield.

Trump, criticized for his alleged leniency toward Vladimir Putin, has vowed to end the war quickly but has not detailed his strategy.

The U.S. remains Ukraine’s largest arms supplier, recently approving $61 billion in aid.

The people at Lemmy.ml are going full brain tapeworm over this.

Meanwhile, I wonder what this truly means. Will the Ukrainians get their people back? Will they get their land back? Will they keep the land they had just before Russia's invasion?

The lessons Putin learns from this will potentially spell distaster. Thankfully, this war has already damaged Russia greatly.

[–] WrenFeathers@lemmy.world 1 points 3 minutes ago

Yeah. I saw the same article posted over there and they’re seemingly marching single-file right in lock-step right up Putin’s ass.

And the copypasta rebuttal links are insane!!

Sorry Ukraine, but America forgot about you and moved on to the next one, as is always the case. Trump and Putin who are allies of Netanyahu played Americans like a fiddle and got what they wanted. They distracted everyone from Ukraine and created the opportunity for a Trump win, which will help them destroy both Palestine and Ukraine.

If I was Zelensky, I'd probably agree to a rebuilt Ukraine with Trump Towers and Tesla factories and all sorts of things. "Just imagine, Mr. President, world class Trump golf course and resort in Crimea--- envy of all East Europe!"

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 113 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

What else is he going to say? Fuck the U.S. and fuck Trump?

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 60 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Exactly. While pride from Zelensky would feel great I'm sure, it would come at the cost of many more Ukrainian lives. Best to suck up to the wannabe dictator and hope he's generous.

Could be they need to make sure trump gets something out of it, and he will come around to Ukraine.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 17 points 9 hours ago

He's willing to suck up to an asshole for his citizens. It's an excellent mark of leadership.

[–] FarceOfWill@infosec.pub 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The reporting I heard from Michael koffman was Ukrainian soldiers felt they were slowly losing to attrition and needed a change in approach anyway, so this may not entirely be bullshit from zelensky.

[–] SolacefromSilence@fedia.io 10 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

The word from NCD, is that Zelensky wasn't bluffing about the nukes. He doesn't think Putin can radiologicaly retaliate after his generals looted the maintenance budget.

Israel has been taking part in a technology transfer. Any escalation in Eastern Europe takes eyes away from what's going on in the Levant.

Iodine pills all around!

Giving Ukraine a nuclear deterrent may be Netanyahu’s Churchill moment, i.e. one good action made by someone with an otherwise uniformly shitty record

[–] random_character_a@lemmy.world 14 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

One of these will happen?

  1. Trump is Putins puppet and US will eventually drop support from Ukraine. Europes support will not be enough and Ukraine eventually falls. Trump tower will be build in Moscow in a decade.

  2. Trump will brown nose Putin. Putin will humiliate Trump and things will continue as is.

  3. Option 2, but Trump dies or is incapacitated. Just replace Trump with Vance or other Republican stooge.

  4. Trump is actually a misunderstood stable genius and war will end with territorial loses that Ukraine can accept.

  5. Russia has an economical collapse and has to pull out of Ukraine, but still desperately tries to cling on Crimea. No peace agreement signed and conflict continues as a confusing mess to far future, maybe stabilizing in Korea style.

  6. Everybody goes nuts and we are all live action roleplaying Fallout.

[–] jlh@lemmy.jlh.name 9 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

1 is impossible due to Europe's conviction. 2 is inevitable.

I think 5 has some elements of truth, but a full on collapse would probably be the end of Putin. More minor economic problems would probably lead to koreafication around the current front line.

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 8 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think Europe has much conviction regarding Ukraine, unfortunately. Most of the larger EU member states are trying to slow their own Russia-backed right-wing movements but appear to be losing ground by the day. It's only a matter of time before the "appeasement" stance becomes widespread and we end up with a situation mirroring the 1930's.

[–] jlh@lemmy.jlh.name 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I think its probably critical that political parties focus on defending against russian agression, even above economic issues or immigration issues. Might be time for unity governments if things start to get bad with the US and Russian fronts.

[–] realitista@lemm.ee 2 points 4 hours ago

It's hard when there's easy points to be scored by saying "why should we spend our hard earned money on far away wars when we can spend it at home on hookers and blow!"

[–] Zerlyna@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

3 should happen soon with all the McDonald he eats.

Scholz (the spineless fuck) has already reached out to Putin.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

Wouldn't nuclear winter help with global warming?

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Well, it would send us all to the middle ages... so, probably yes /s

[–] delgato@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

A nuclear winter isn’t a scientific guarantee, many post-cold war models have suggested it might not happen.

That said, shit would get fucked up but for how long and what affects they have on the atmosphere is still debated.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 1 points 57 minutes ago

Wow, I didn't know it was debated. Thank you.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

So would the collapse of civilization. Neither counts as a win for humanity.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Fuck humanity, i want to ensure a place for my cats to live in.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 2 points 59 minutes ago

Yes but dogs.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 hours ago

Cats will probably be okay. Their wild cousins are native to desert climates.

[–] NeoToasty@kbin.melroy.org 0 points 5 hours ago

Yes, it will indeed end sooner, once Trump's idea of America gives the entire war the cold shoulder and Trump sucks Putin's dick under the table.

It will not be in your favor, this war.

Remember when America tried being up and arms about Hong Kong? Forgotten about. What happened? Hong Kong fell. It'll be exactly like that.

[–] Nomad@infosec.pub 5 points 10 hours ago

Putin's asset in America will help him end the war while saving face.
