I installed this yesterday. It's not great. 29% of all power used goes to it. It's getting removed as we speak.

Signals alternative to SMS

lmao, simplex is not Signal's and also not exactly an alternative to SMS.

fwiw the confusion in this thread was presumably inspired by another recent one asking for a Signal alternative for SMS (which simplex is also not, but was mentioned there).

Signal alternative to SMS? What has Signal to do with SimpleX?

[–] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

People were recommending SimpleX as an alternative messenger that's encrypted-by-default, but falls back to SMS when the other person doesn't have it

[–] hfkldjbuq@beehaw.org 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

what? simplex does not falls back to sms.

[–] kendbi@szmer.info 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

First time I hear about it as well. As far as I know Simplex doesn't use phone numbers (or any identifiers for that matter). It can be alternative for signal but it will not help if you need SMS app.

SimpleX do not use shit communication tool like sms. Why should it must use them since it is born to replace them?

[–] thehellboy@fosstodon.org 2 points 2 years ago

@bkrl @kendbi because older people would use it instead of private messages on another app that they do not know how to use and configure. If you want to keep your privacy, you need that all of the people that contact you, do it through a secure app and channel.
With signal using the SMS and calls that would work for older people to just use one app to do it all.

It is a natural selection.

[–] imgprojts@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

It was an earlier post where simplex was a recommended solution. I tried it and wanted to reply to that with this picture, but I couldn't so I posted with a similar title.

[–] thehellboy@fosstodon.org 5 points 2 years ago

@imgprojts you are right...
I tried also and it consumes a lot of battery.
I am using silence and chomp now to see

[–] bkrl@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I have latest SimpleX version (4.2 stable) and it doesn't have any battery drain issue. Signal is for children, it is not for serious use. Based in California, it needs of a phone number to use it, it is under US jurisdiction. Please, do not mentioning it again in future. SMS? Are you kidding?

[–] thehellboy@fosstodon.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

@bkrl @imgprojts I installed some version (probably the last 2 months ago) and it had battery drain issues. And I have graphene os installed...

[–] Lynda@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm curious if the most up to date version, v4.2.1, has the battery consumption issue (or if there's a configuration setting to change). Maybe it is just Android, not iOS, and curious about the differences.

The developers are very active and responsive, so I hope if the issue still exists it gets reported and the devs have the opportunity to fix it.

[–] thehellboy@fosstodon.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

@Lynda I uninstalled the simplex like 1 month ago after noticing the battery drain issues. Maybe its solved now but I am using chomp and silence now!!! 2 different apps that I am not having battery issues right now.
Maybe it was my pixel and the version of graphene is that I had until last month, but the battery without intense usage lasted like 1 day (max). Now with this 2 apps running and doing the same as before my battery last 2 days no intense usage.

Glad chomp/silence has worked out for you. Btw...SimpleXChat is different by protecting your social graph and not needing to share your private profile ID to contacts (via one time use invite codes). Can also be used on iOS/Android and hoping one day a desktop app GUI (not just a console app). Also has audio, video, file transfers, and groups. If really into privacy, you can host your own server and/or use Tor. https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat#roadmap

What has really impressed me is how they are solving some of the industry problems (decentralization, privacy, metadata, etc); it's not just another communication platform, it's different.

[–] thehellboy@fosstodon.org 1 points 2 years ago

@Lynda I agree. My only issue with simpleX was the battery drain problem. I will give it a try in the end of the year.
I did not use it that much because I just installed it and ran it... Sent the invitation to one of my contacts, he installed it and then we never could get in touch and he was not on my simplex contacts...
After he installs do I need to send a diferent code every time we need to talk?
Thanks

Did you report the battery problem on github or their subreddit?

I've also read these recommendations:

1) Switching from instant notifications (default) to periodic - some users say it does reduce battery usage.

2) If you are often reconnecting to the messaging servers - it may be happening on slow/unstable mobile networks - please try enabling dev tools and then increase connection timeouts in advanced network settings. It might result in fewer reconnections and reduced battery usage.

I'm banned from Reddit so no. Not banned from GitHub lol. But this is a place. I'm sure they know about it.

[–] Icarus@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

if I may ask, how did you get banned from reddit ?

[–] imgprojts@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

I think I posted on the wrong place about ending putin. I then started getting all sorts of getting banned from this and that place for insisting violence. Finally full ban. All while I was sleeping. Lol Reddit is a joke.
