Years ago, when home web cams were new, there was a documentary that showed what pets get up to when the owners aren't home. The #1 first thing is to get up on all the places that they're not allowed.

They don't learn that they're not allowed certain places; they learn that they're not allowed when you're around.

That's why you upgrade your webcam with a nerf gun.

That's why you clean your surfaces before preparing food!

The Nerf gun suggestion sounds more fun

I finished my lunch one day, cleared off the table, went back downstairs to my office - oops, I forgot something - go back upstairs immediately to find my dog already completely standing on the table, looking for crumbs.

"Oops! I'm usually done by the time you come back down. Ha ha!"

[–] ving_thor@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Of course. But at least we can teach him not to be on the table when we're eating.

Yah, it was just a comment, not a criticism. We do the same with ours, in the futile hope that they'll at least abstain from jumping on the dining room table when we have guests. In true cat fashion, we have one who only jumps in the dining table when we have guests.

That's why I'll randomly put double sided tape on surfaces.

Sure, sure, while you are awake and around you can have it your way.

I'm here to say the cat WILL learn it is not supposed to be on the table.

This does not mean the cat will not get on the table.

Ours has leaned they are not allowed in the counter when we're watching.

Does Gin have a sibling named Tonic?

[–] ving_thor@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

He has a roommate called Whisky. But Whisky is still highly sceptical of Gin.

How do you correct the cat when he goes on the table?

[–] ving_thor@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Firmly saying "NO", then loud clapping, and finally lifting him to the ground and bit paying attention to gim for a few moments.

After a while they react to the signs. No garantees that it works on every cat, but it works with our other cat.

You should remind your cat that his learning is making Descartes sad

Believe it or not, straight to jail.
