That's pretty cool. Does this mean that if I have my own Nextcloud server, that I'll have my own fedi ID ready to go? Will it be an 'app' within Nextcloud? It's own instance?

I wish to know this too!

Own your posts: Everything you post stays on your Nextcloud!

This is kind of misleading since nazi fucks can easly reblog your posts. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–] altair222@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Seems like it has stopped being supported

You already have a Fedi id. It's @electric_nan . Lemmy is part of the Fediverse.

So this nextcloud feature will just be a client? Not a server? Sorry if I'm missing something. I do have trouble sometimes grokking the implicatiins of the fediverse.

@electric_nan

It's gonna be a server, and lemmy is also a server, both are servers 💁🏻‍♀️

So myserver.com/nextcloud is gonna be an activitypub instance, and I can make a user on it like @electric_nan2@myserver.com That's what I'm asking.

always great to have more fediverse options!

[–] admin@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

This is incredibly good news for the 'Fediverse'!

Yes it federated using ActivityPub protocol. It was only in alpha release though when I last used it, and it broke with one of the upgrades. I'm wondering if it has matured yet to a V1 and if others are finding it stable now?

The article mentions it will be better later this year:

Nextcloud Social is available as an alpha version for earlier releases, with an update to Hub 3 coming soon. The team at Nextcloud is working with the community to add new features and give users a way out of the Big Tech sandbox. We will make the updated Nextcloud Social a default part of Nextcloud later this year.

Ugh, that has been available for years and was so far in a very sorry state. Maybe they want to give it a major overhaul for NC 26, but I am not holding my breath.

[–] Canard@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 years ago

They did an overhaul specifically because of Musk according to their blog:

That is why we began working on Nextcloud Social, to make sure there would be a credible alternative by the time the deal closed.

Nextcloud Social, nice! Although developing and improving current features for actual cloud storage would be nicer!
