Dammit! Folgers was my generic coffee go-to! Anyone know what brand I can buy from a major grocery chain that doesn’t donate to fascists?

cafe bustelo

Edit: its good coffee. Not sure about its political leanings though.

Unfortunately I think you’re in the same boat there. Care Bustelo is owned by JM Smucker Co which in recent years, according to open secrets, has made almost exclusive donations to the right including the RNC as well as Trump’s campaign to the tune of $75k and $25k respectively.

If you have em near you, the Safeway grocery ‘signature select’ branded whole bean coffee has been my go to for a while now(well, since my preferred local roaster decided to be a union busting shitheel and I stopped going there). And as far as I can tell they at least donate to both parties relatively equally. Which, honestly I’m not sure is better or worse.

But also fuck Safeway for putting up fucking security fencing and receipt gates at the store near me. Remember kids, you’ve never seen or even heard of anyone stealing food in your entire life. Especially from a corporation.

+1 for bustelo

A) Any of the wholesale clubs will sell big bags or cheap good quality coffee.

B) Most grocery stores will sell small bags of good cheap coffee.

I do whichever of the above is easiest for me based on where I need groceries.

Don’t switch to Maxwell House, but basically any other coffee is better tasting than those two.

Coffee is like chocolate though: it basically always comes with the risk of supporting slavery. It sucks and it’s not fair that the costs of ensuring (or trying to ensure, Tony’s Chocolonely can’t even be certain) slavery is not involved price most people out of consuming them.

[–] MrVilliam@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Tony’s Chocolonely can’t even be certain

Tony's is really fucking good. And because chocolate is 100% a luxury good, I have absolutely no problem reducing my candy bar intake down to one or two expensive chocolate bars per year when I know that they're doing their best to fairly source their objectively superior product. And I make it last a week or two by using a ziploc bag. Tony's is best in small doses, and I prefer to pair it with a nice bourbon as dessert, but maybe that's just me being a bougie bitch.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That’s how I treat chocolate as well, but coffee is a lot harder for me to restrict. I buy the fair-tradiest coffee I can find, but I suspect that’s mostly marketing.

[–] grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 4 months ago

I just picked up some "Top of the Morning" coffee and it's pricey, but the marketing is very cheerful and it ticks the "ethically sourced" boxes for me, as much as anything I buy online can. Plus, it's tasty.

Dunkin is arguably an upgrade for grocery store coffee.

[–] ThunderWhiskers@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

If you have one anywhere nearby just get a Costco membership. In many cases if you are looking for an alternative to generic brand whatever Kirkland is going to be the best bang for your buck and the company is employee owned and very consumer friendly.

[–] ji17br@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 months ago

If you want cheapish good coffee I’ve always liked melitta.

His plan to make groceries more affordable is literally “Trust me bro, I’m standing next to groceries”

At least Harris proposed fining price gougers.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Yeah, but he bought these groceries himself at a real grocery store. And did the press conference AT the grocery store to enhance the point. AND none of that is true cause he has probably never shopped at a grocery store himself and did this at a golf club.

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 25 points 4 months ago

Their coffee sucks anyway, so no big loss there...

[–] Assman@sh.itjust.works 24 points 4 months ago

trump the bean salesman. Member the goya ordeal?

[–] modifier@lemmy.ca 23 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Aren't they on that table to demonstrate high prices though? Does Folgers want this?

[–] SonOfMothman@lemmy.world 33 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Yeah he was supposed to talk about the economy but didn’t(again) so it just looked weird having random groceries next to him lol

[–] VirtualOdour@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Hey he covered it; how dare you try and make him sound like a crazy old man talking nonsense... here's what he said,

“Wow school lunches up 65 per cent, how can a family afford this? But look at this over here, what a nice job...”

“I think I’m going to take some of them back to my cottage and have a lot of fun.

“Like the Cheerios, I haven’t seen Cheerios in a long time, I’m gonna take them back with me.”

[–] OlinOfTheHillPeople@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

With all the labels suspiciously facing the camera...

[–] ArchRecord@lemm.ee 4 points 4 months ago

Yes, it is, and I find it absolutely insane that so many people haven't spent even five seconds finding out why the products are there.

I think Trump's an insanely weird guy too, but people keep on attributing this to some kind of brand deal when it obviously wasn't.

[–] Shard@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Wait...

Folgers as in the incest coffee folgers?

This seems like a cool idea, but they lost me at needing to make an account to view my score :(

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I haven’t played with it much yet but it allows you to view corporate scores for free.
