I don't think that's the case actually now that we've seen Trump's reactions to various dictators after he took office.
I think it's love. The desire for the love and approval of a father figure. He desires the fatherly approval of someone he looks up to, and Putin is completely willing to fulfill that desire in exchange for what he wants.
