an extreme example of a phenomenon that academics call “internet banging”
Really? We call it that?

For "academics" read "two guys we found in the cafeteria at a local university" unless otherwise specified.
Today I learned a term "academics" pulled from their asses to describe "being a fucking psycho" and "attempted murder."
Not sure why they charged him with murder 2 - this is clearly some premeditated shit.
he had the travel to calm down and think how stupid it was but still went all the way there. That is hard to understand
Anyone is capable of being violent with enough provocation in the heat of the moment. It's the people who are willing to be violent while calm and having had time to think about it that are truly dangerous.
The game was ArcheAge.
This is the line the victim said to the attacker once the attacker was subdued:
Leeper quipped that his only answer to Kang was: “It will be a long time before you play video games.”
Oh god. I played that when it came out but when I finally realized how much housing and the in game market mattered, I noped out. That’s to say, I don’t play it long because it was obvious very quickly.
How do these people figure out where their opponent lives?
Modern social media that demands irl info and dumbasses who can't figure out how to fill in false information into them. If I got into an online dispute like this, I'd just give them the address of some police barracks. Let them have fun with charges on an attemped swat on the cops.
Obviously he went there to bang the other player's mom, and decided to take it a bit further.
Shorsey approves.
This is horrible.. but of course it was a Korean MMORPG
What do you mean "of course"? If I had to guess the game in question, I would have said CounterStrike or Call of Duty.
Oh come on, MMORPG players have always been the worse of the two. I mean, most people of both camps are really nice. But playing a shooter vs pretending you're a wizard? Way more chance to drop off the really deep end.
(Please don't take this too seriously.)
Yeah MMO players will actively change their life just to get back at players in game for months or years.247 no time off. When I saw the title, immediately knew it was an MMO.
Source: wow sod player
I'll be honest: I think this only made the news because it wasn't league of legends. I was shocked.
I thought it was going to be CoD or CS. Years ago, there was a CS dispute that ended in an arson attempt.
How did he know where the guy lived?
These dumbasses just give out their address even though everyone knows about police swatting at this point. That or had it on some social media that required it and they didn't think to fill in false information.
Is this why everyone is antisocial online now? Nobody talks in games anymore :(
Not this exact reason, but yeah I hate most people I encounter in games so I stay away from multiplayer stuff, which sucks because that's all devs want to make anymore...
How else are they gonna push you into shitty cosmetics or P2W bullshit for extra monies?
It's not just the psycho assholes looking for people to hammer. It's hard to want to engage with voice chat when the general public has no fucking concept of mic discipline. Nobody wants to hear the conversations happening around you. They don't want to hear you eating. They certainly don't want to hear your background music. Use push to talk.
This. The internet feels like its getting lonelier. The only relationships available are either parasocial, or with bots...
What the fuck
Before I read the headline, I was like "Hey, that's my hammer, I wonder what this is about!"
